Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan Differ On Standardized Testing In Schools

In roundtables with teachers and visits to classrooms, President Barack Obama is continuing to attack the GOP ticket on education this week, from Mitt Romney's record to the snip-happy budget of vice presidential pick Paul Ryan.

Obama for America released an advertisement that is playing in Ohio and Virginia on Thursday, asserting that Romney "cannot relate" to public school issues, such as the need for smaller class sizes. The video also criticizes "teaching to some test," referring to an oft-repeated criticism of the No Child Left Behind law, which ties school funding to standardized test scores.

The Romney campaign quickly shot back with a statement calling the education ad one of several "misleading and hypocritical attacks." While Romney's statement responded to the ad -- such as Obama's references to Ryan's cuts and class size -- Romney is, in fact, a big proponent of standardized testing. "I like testing in our schools," Romney said in a 2007 debate. "I think it allows us to get better schools, better teachers."

But in an August 2007 joint interview with Children's Pressline, a news wire for student journalists, Rep. Ryan (R-Wis.) expressed opposition. "I have one big criticism about No Child Left Behind. That's the testing component," Ryan said.

Ryan continued that he specifically didn't vote for the testing mandates of NCLB, which requires annual standardized testing in reading and math. "I voted actually against the testing," he said. "The amendment that I supported to take the testing component out of No Child Left Behind was defeated, so we lost our amendment."

Romney is also a proponent of something known as the Common Core State Standards, a national set of curriculum goals in reading and math that the Obama administration has promoted, and that most states have agreed to adopt.

But this, too, would seem to contradict with Ryan's view. "My concern with the testing is that it moves toward a nationalized curriculum," Ryan said in the 2007 interview.

Rod Paige, the former education secretary who was also part of the 2007 Children's Pressline interview, defended testing, saying, if "you find a place where they're not testing kids that means they don't love them quite as much." Paige now serves as one of Romney's education advisors.

Since being picked as Romney's running mate, Ryan has not further fleshed out his education views, and the Romney campaign did not respond to requests for comment. Of course, Romney and Ryan do agree on some things within education: support for vouchers, which allow families to use public money for private schools, and an overall view on spending.

"Stagnant student achievement levels and exploding deficits have demonstrated that massive amounts of federal funding and top-town interventions are not the way to provide America's students with a high-quality education," Ryan's website states.

But a group of "education insiders," say that the Ryan pick actually isn't that significant for education, according to a new survey released Wednesday by education consulting group Whiteboard Advisors.

According to the survey, 54 percent of insiders indicated the pick was insignificant, versus 29 percent who thought the development was important for education. "Outside of the implication of spending cuts to education, I have never seen Paul Ryan actively engaged in education," one wrote. "My sense is he would support moving even more decision-making to states, with even less role for the federal government."

"Education is not Paul Ryan's thing," another wrote.

Whiteboard Advisors, which specializes in school policy, sends surveys about once a month to 50 to 75 anonymous political and policy "insiders," including current and former senior staff from the U.S. Department of Education, White House, Congress and think tanks. Whiteboard only recently began making portions of its surveys public.

Some predicted that Ryan would focus on changes to Pell grants, school vouchers and local control of schools, and that his election as vice president would "be a bad thing for funding levels" of college financial aid.

Additionally, the PDK/Gallup education poll, released Wednesday, found that Romney trails Obama on education by a small margin of five percentage points, but that Romney actually has a small lead on Obama among independent voters.

Advantage flu virus: Scientists discover one of the ways the influenza virus disarms host cells

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? When you are hit with the flu, you know it immediately -- fever, chills, sore throat, aching muscles, fatigue. This is your body mounting an immune response to the invading virus. But less is known about what is happening on the molecular level.

Now Northwestern University scientists have discovered one of the ways the influenza virus disarms our natural defense system. The virus decreases the production of key immune system-regulating proteins in human cells that help fight the invader. The virus does this by turning on the microRNAs -- little snippets of RNA -- that regulate these proteins.

The researchers, led by molecular biologist Curt M. Horvath, are among the first to show the influenza virus can change the expression of microRNA to control immune responses in human lung cells.

The findings reveal a new aspect of the interaction between the influenza virus and its host. Knowing how viruses disable the immune system to wreak havoc in the body will help researchers design therapeutics to preserve the immune response and keep people healthy. The knowledge also may be valuable for future diagnostics.

The study is published by the Journal of Biological Chemistry. The paper will appear in its final form in September.

"It's a battle of supremacy between virus and host," said Horvath, the senior author of the paper. "Our goal is to understand how the flu replicates in the host. Now we've discovered a new pathway in which the flu controls the immune response, by shutting down vital protein production. With better understanding of this mechanism, one day we may be able to customize therapeutics to target individual flu strains."

Horvath is the Soretta and Henry Shapiro Research Professor in Molecular Biology and professor of molecular biosciences in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. He also is professor of microbiology-immunology and medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine.

A microRNA has only 17 to 24 nucleotides, and its function is to dampen or shut down the production of proteins in the body. (Proteins are the workhorses of the cell.) There are hundreds of different types of microRNAs in animals.

It's been known for many years that when a virus such as influenza infects respiratory cells there is an immediate antiviral response at the cellular level -- the first barrier for protecting the body from the virus. Most of the changes that occur are a result of antiviral gene expression.

About 10 years ago, scientists first learned about small RNA pathways called microRNAs, which regulate gene expression. This led Horvath to want to investigate the role of microRNAs in influenza virus infection and determine what they are contributing to the antiviral response. Exactly which genes might the microRNAs be targeting?

In their current study, Horvath and his team used human lung cells, infected them with the influenza A virus and looked to see which microRNAs were activated in response to the virus. They focused on six microRNAs that were found to increase in abundance during flu infection.

The researchers found the virus activated two microRNAs that turned on the genes IRAK1 and MAPK3. This resulted in a decrease in the amount of proteins that help turn on the immune response.

Essentially, the virus uses the cell mechanisms to its advantage, disarming parts of the natural antiviral system. The flu takes over the expression of microRNAs for its own purposes. The flu increases the expression of microRNA, which decreases the amount of protein and diminishes the immune response.

Having identified a specific set of microRNAs whose expression in host respiratory cells is changed by the influenza virus, Horvath next is interested at looking at the clinical outcomes. He is working with Pedro C. Avila, M.D., professor of medicine-allergy-immunology at the Feinberg School to see if the microRNAs are disregulated in patients with influenza.

I?m interested in doing something with interior design or architecture. I don?t know what kind of degrees I would have to get though or what type of school to attend, or really I just don?t have much info on it. can you answer any of these and what school in southern cali would you recommend?

Interior design is simpler: you can do it as a bachelors [or higher], it?s often offered as an Associate [2 year] degree. If you have some talent and a 2 year degree, you may be able to find a firm to bring you in on the ground floor, but frankly, I think it?s a field that is going to continue to suffer badly in the economic downturn.

Architecture is way more involved, since you have to engineer buildings capable of withstanding earthquakes and hurricanes: people?s lives depend on you. It generally takes a bachelors in fine art or engineering, plus another 2 to 3 years.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton admits he was surprised to discover he hasn't been given a shirt number for the forthcoming campaign.

A U.S. Embassy official says the $43 million joint U.S.-Vietnamese project begins Thursday at Danang airport, the site of the former U.S. base in central Vietnam.

U.S. planes sprayed Agent Orange during the Vietnam War to eliminate enemy jungle cover. Dioxin lingers in soil and watersheds for generations and has been linked to cancer, birth defects and other disabilities.

Danang's airport is one of three known dioxin hotspots in Vietnam.

The U.S. has given about $60 million for environmental restoration and social services in Vietnam since 2007, but this is its first direct involvement in dioxin cleanup.

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Ernesto kept on a westerly course in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday, and was expected to strengthen slowly over the next 48 hours, soaking Jamaica as it passes the island on its way to the Yucatan, U.S. forecasters said.

Tropical storm conditions were expected to reach Jamaica by Sunday afternoon, and tropical storm conditions were possible along the coast of Honduras by late Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Ernesto was following a predicted track that should keep it at sea until a forecast landfall, possibly at hurricane strength, over Mexico's Yucatan peninsula on Wednesday.

The storm was 215 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, around 8 a.m. EDT on Sunday, with maximum sustained winds weakening somewhat to 50 mph,

Heavy rains were expected throughout Sunday in Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Three to 6 inches were expected in Jamaica. Showers and thunderstorms - sometimes severe - were possible on the islands of Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire off Venezuela's northern coast.

"Ernesto is forecast to become a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean in a day or two," the U.S. forecasters in Miami said.

Ernesto would be deemed a hurricane if its winds reach 74 mph.

Forecasters expect Ernesto to move into the southern Gulf of Mexico by Thursday but it was too early to know whether it could disrupt oil and gas operations in the gulf.

U.S. National Hurricane Center forecasters said another tropical storm, called Florence, formed on Saturday in the eastern Atlantic and was moving west in open waters. As of early Sunday, forecasters said, Florence was about 680 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands.

With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, Florence was the sixth named storm of the Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, moving west-northwest at 15 mph. Some strengthening was expected over the next day or two.

August and September are usually the most active months of the Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

Red Cross says attacked in Libya's Misrata, halts work

Armed assailants laid siege on Sunday to a residence of Red Cross staff in the western Libyan city of Misrata, causing major damage to the building, the organisation said.

Seven staff were in the residence when the "unknown individuals" attacked the building with "various kinds of heavy weaponry" at dawn, said a statement from the International Committee of the Red Cross, adding that they were unharmed.

The ICRC strongly condemned the attack and said it would suspend its work in Misrata and Benghazi in the east following what it called the fifth such incident in the two cities in less than three months.

"We are appalled by this latest act and by the deliberate targeting of our staff: they have put their lives at risk to serve the Libyan people both during and after the conflict," said Ishfaq Muhamed Khan, ICRC delegation head in Libya.

The Geneva-based organisation said that it has become extremely concerned about the "wave of attacks against humanitarian workers and the deterioration of the security situation in Libya."

"Given the circumstances, we are forced to announce, with considerable regret, that we will be suspending all our activities in Misrata and Benghazi and that our delegates in those cities will be temporarily relocated," said Khan.

"This most recent attack could have had very grave consequences for our colleagues," he added.

The restaurant on Kingsway I originally planned to dine at was closed, so I decided to visit Beautiful Island near Metrotown instead. Beautiful Island is an interesting name, but it's not related to the Chinese name ??? which means hyacinth.

The place was not hard to find at all. As we drove along Imperial, we came upon a large sign mounted on the side of the building. There was plenty of parking space in the back.
The menu was in magazine format.
Apart from the lists of food and drinks, there were several pages with some interesting info regarding popular Taiwainese eats.
I started the meal with a hot house special milk tea (?????) ($3.50) which is a recommended signature drink. I can't even put my disappointment into words. It was an almost tasteless watery "tea" with a faint milky flavour. I think I could make something similar if I under-steep with a teabag and throw in some milk. I almost never send any food or drinks back since I try not to waste, but I was forced to return this because it was so bad that I could not imagine taking more than a few sips.
I figured I should stay away from the drinks, so I asked to substitute my milk tea with soya pudding instead. I thought it would be a safe bet since it was probably tofu straight out of the box with pearls. Well apparently not so. The tofu was not the smooth dessert type and the texture was somewhat grainy. The pearls were mostly in clumps, most likely because whoever boiled them did not bother stirring. And the flavour of the ginger syrup was so weak that it might as well have been brown water. But at least this was much better than the milk tea.
I knew the house special stewed pork belly with rice (????) ($7.95) would be a risky choice because not many places know how to make stewed pork belly well. The gelatinous skin and fatty layer were tender and tasty, but the lean part of the meat was very dry and hard.
The shredded pork with dry tofu with rice (?????) ($6.95) was pretty good and I think it was the only decent dish we had. The flavour was savoury, not too salty, and went very well with rice.
Personally I found the prawns with pineapple in mayonnaise with rice (?????) ($7.95) a bit odd. First of all, I don't think mayonnaise fits in with Chinese cuisine. Secondly, the dish was served lukewarm. It was like a tepid prawn and fruit salad, but I think prawn should be served hot and pineapple should be served cold. Disregarding the temperature, the taste was acceptable I suppose.
Out of 3 entrees, 1 drink and 1 dessert, only the shredded pork with dry tofu was decent. Service was pretty much non-existent and we were mostly ignored. Nobody ever came over to refill our tea or asked if we enjoyed our food. And I actually did not get any tea because I ordered a drink and they just assumed I wouldn't be drinking tea. I do give them credit for letting me substitute my milk tea for soya pudding, but they just took the drink back, dumped it out and gave me the substitute without so much as an apology or an explanation as to why the drink was so bad. I don't think I'll be coming back here again.
