More from YourTango: 6 Money Matters To Discuss Before Marriage [EXPERT]

Contrary to what you might think, when it comes to relationships, more money does not equal more happiness.

It is important to look at the bigger picture. You may assume that if your budget, retirement plan and cash-flow worksheet are in order, you will have a happy relationship. However, this is not the case.

Your views on money impact every decision you make as a couple from the big stuff like houses and cars to the mundane details like the kind of coffee you drink and the brand of shoes you wear. But how does this affect our relationship? Here is an example: A husband calls his wife the "Money Nazi" because when he walks through the door, their conversation goes like this:

Wife: Where did you go out to lunch?
Husband: We went Italian today.
Wife: "What did you have?
Husband: "A Chicken Caesar Salad.
Wife: How much did it cost?
Husband: I don't know ? about 13 dollars.
Wife: Thirteen dollars for a chicken salad?!

If this argument sounds familiar, you aren't alone. Here are three culprits of financial tension in romantic relationships:

1. Your money DNA. While there is no money gene per se, how you look at and feel about money is as ingrained in you as the color of your eyes. You are born with it.

Germany orders recall of some Novartis flu shots - Health & Fitness ...

By FRANK JORDANS | Associated Press ? Published October 25, 2012 Modified October 25, 2012

BERLIN ? German authorities ordered a recall Thursday of some batches of Novartis flu vaccine as a precautionary measure after the company reported the appearance of small particles in the manufacturing process.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute, which is part of the country's Ministry of Health, said there had been no reports of particle formation in Germany or of any serious side effects during the current flu season.

"However, in the interest of risk prevention and consumer safety it is necessary to cancel the approval for certain vaccines, since the formation of particles in the vaccine and therefore the risk of serious side effects cannot be ruled out," Institute President Prof. Klaus Cichutek said in a statement.

The decision affects four batches of the influenza vaccine Begripal and one batch of Fluad. It does not affect the seasonal vaccine Optaflu.

Italy's health ministry banned the sale of four Novartis flu drugs on Wednesday. These included Fluad and Begripal - sold as Aggripal in Italy - as well as two others: Influpozzi Adiuvato and Influpozzi Subunita.

Switzerland's regulator Swissmedic also suspended deliveries of flu vaccines from Novartis as a preventive measure.

Britain's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said there was no evidence yet to pull the vaccines off the market but added it was gathering further information on the Novartis vaccines.

The Swiss pharmaceutical company said Thursday it was cooperating with the Ministry of Health in Italy, where the vaccines are produced, and was committed to providing vaccines to patients for the current flu season. There had been no adverse effects reported so far from more than 1 million doses of Agrippal/Begripal and Fluad administered, the Basel-based company said.

"Novartis confirms that these particles can occur in the vaccine manufacturing process and is confident that there is no impact on the safety or efficacy of the vaccine," it said in a statement.

Buying art online is a leap of faith. A lot of people look at abstract art and think, "I could do that." Well, that might be true, but what a lot of people don't comprehend about abstract art is the worth of the piece has little to do with what is seen on the canvas. Abstract art is about the progression the artist went through to generate it. It is also about the passion that it, hopefully, stirs up. There is a school of thought in the abstract art world that believes the layering of paint allows the painting to be born. Some artists will actually weigh their painting to establish whether or not it is finished. They feel that the piece isn't ready for the person buying art until the true image has been brought to fruition. The artist recognizes that vision by allowing the contours and colors of the painting to join and lap over one another creating the ultimate piece. The colors the artist decide on also helps create the emotions that attract the art buyers eye. When I see a piece of abstract art, I am either drawn to it and end up buying the art or it does nothing for me. I would suggest when buying abstract art to purchase a piece that speaks to you. Perhaps it is the colors or the shapes, but whatever grabs your eye take the time to really look. If you're choosing a piece of abstract art to buy remember that it will hang in your residence for sometime. It should be something that draws your eye time and again. You will be looking at it for years. Buying art, any art, comes down to a couple of different categories. Are you buying art because you think it will look nice over your couch? Or are you buying art because you think it will increase in value over a period of time? In my estimation, when a person is buying art online, pick a piece you feel passionate, about and if it gains in value that's just icing on the cake.

Team Building Session? Try this Exercise

team building sessionRecently I learned of a unique team building session idea that I have been itching to try out. I was able to wrangle a friend into testing it out at her office, and it had very positive results. Today we?ll be looking at what I?ve come to call the Twenty Minute Challenge. (I heard someone at HRevolution mention this a few weeks back, but I can?t remember who! If someone knows, please tell me so the person can get the credit for this.)

The purpose of the Twenty Minute Challenge

More so now than ever, we need people on our teams who can think quickly, respond coherently during high pressure situations, and present complex information effectively. This team building session is focused on helping your people do all three of those things well.

How it works

Let?s say you have ten people on your team. You break them into teams and give each team this short list of instructions:

  • You have ten minutes to read your book.
  • You will have five minutes to create a short presentation on your book?s main topics.
  • You will share your presentation with the group for three to five minutes.

And then you set them loose to tackle the challenge ahead. Sounds interesting, right?

Just to make sure you?re totally prepared, you?ll need a few materials to facilitate this team building session:

  • Writing utensils and paper for each participant
  • A computer for each team to develop slides, conduct research, etc.
  • 3-5 different books on business-related topics
    OR
3-5 eBooks on business-related topics (these free ones would be useful)
  • A presentation screen and projector (Optional, if you plan to have them present formally)

Books to consider

If you don?t already have some books in mind, here are a few I would recommend. This list is not exhaustive; just a handful that I have reviewed and can vouch for in terms of high quality ideas and concepts that would be valuable for HR, recruiting, and business leaders.

Just a quick note: I would steer clear of narrative-based or parable books. These are valuable tools and have their place, but they are harder to glean short tidbits of information from in the style necessary for this sort of team building session.

Real life example

These team building sessions always sound great on paper. But how did it play out in a real situation? The note below is from a regular reader and a new blogger in the HR space. Kristina is the Office Manager for the local Epsco Staffing company here in Huntsville and uses exercises like these to keep her team sharp. Now I?ll turn it over to Kristina to explain their experience.

Kristina: We had 3 small groups of 2-3 people each and used 101 Strategies for Recruiting Success, The Levity Effect & Finding Keepers as our books.

I explained the project and then assigned each group their book. Of course they all looked terrified and upset that they only had 10 minutes to ?read? the book! One team took off with their book to a quiet place in the office and started reading chapter 1 right off! The other 2 groups started with a plan. One group read the key points out loud so the other could take notes and one group divided up the reading, note taking and online research immediately!

101 Strategies for Recruiting Success- This group approached the task by pulling chapter titles and bullet points from the book to summarize. They fed the info into a power point presentation and one person spoke about the book while the other person flipped the PowerPoint. What was really great about this group is I?ve been watching their ability to work together as a team decline over the last couple of weeks and this was just the spark they needed to realize they can work well together and produce good results! Now that they?ve been reminded about that I can cross that off my to do list? ;)

The Levity Effect- This group was hilarious! Note taking/reading through the key points & on-line research. They probably freaked out the least about the ?10 minute rule? and that was no surprise to me. They immediately divided the work up and started their tasks. One of them googled the book and was linked directly to your post-so I think you and they had the same key points! This book was a good choice for our group because we absolutely believe in having fun at work and I think it made them feel better that it?s not just a ?Kristina idea.? :-) They pulled ideas from the book and shared them with us as things they want us to start doing in the office and asked the group some ?hard interview questions? so they get bonus points!

Finders Keepers- This group was the one that almost tackled me to get to a quiet space to start reading. I didn?t see them take a notebook or anything, just the book! I was a little shocked and very curious how that was going to turn out. They ended up only getting through one chapter, but they were successful in turning that into a three minute presentation. I asked them about their approach and it was attributed to the ?leader? of that groups old school paper pushing ways. She didn?t want to give a presentation on something she hadn?t read so her best solution was to start reading and see how far she could get!

The power of teamwork

Ultimately they all had a different ways of getting to the end, but they all worked together in their teams! The first 2 groups did the best at getting as much information from the book down to an informative summary. All 3 groups did well on their ?presentation on the fly!? The best part was when they started talking about how well they all worked as a team and it was kind of like an ?ah-ha? moment in the office today (it?s amazing how quickly work can be done when we all work with each other instead of against each other)! It wasn?t met with resistance, they had fun with it and they are interested in reading some of the books we used! As many hours as my girls work I never thought they would want to do some outside of work reading, but I was wrong!

Wrapping up

This has the ability to bring teams closer together and challenge them in an entertaining, yet informative way. If you?re looking for more ideas on the benefits of team building or want more great content, feel free to subscribe for free email updates!

Combined pesticide exposure affects bumblebee colony success

Monday, October 22, 2012

Individual worker behaviour and colony success are both affected when bees are exposed to a combination of pesticides, according to research conducted by Dr Richard Gill and Dr Nigel Raine at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This research, published in Nature, investigated social bumblebee colonies which rely on the collective performance of numerous individual worker bees. It showed that chronic exposure to two commonly-used pesticides (a neonicotinoid and a pyrethroid), at concentrations approximating field-level exposure, impaired natural foraging behaviour and increased worker mortality. This led to significant reductions in colony success, and increased rates of colony failure.

Bees are typically exposed to numerous pesticides when collecting pollen and nectar from crops, and this is the first study to examine the potential effects of exposure to a combination of pesticides under realistic field conditions.

While recent studies have investigated the role of pesticides on either individual bee behaviours, or the impact on whole colonies, how changes to individual behaviour could have knock-on effects for the colony has not previously been shown.

Dr Raine said: "There is an urgent need to understand the reasons behind current bee declines as they are essential pollinators of many agricultural crops and wild flowers. We rely on these insects to produce most of the food we eat and maintain the landscapes we enjoy".

"Previous studies investigating the possible role of pesticides in current bee declines have focused on honeybees, but it is also crucial that we understand how pesticides affect other bee species," added Dr Gill.

This study mimicked realistic scenarios in which 40 early stage bumblebee colonies received four-week exposure to two pesticides that are frequently encountered when foraging on flowering crops: the neonicotinoid 'Imidacloprid' and the pyrethroid 'lambda-cyhalothrin'.

Imidacloprid was provided in a sucrose solution at levels that could be found in nectar and lambda-cyhalothrin was administered following label guidance for field spray applications. Bees were able to forage in the field providing a realistic behavioural setting, and the foraging behaviour of individual workers was recorded using radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging technology.

The researchers found that bees exposed to imidacloprid were less able to forage effectively, particularly when it came to collecting pollen. This meant treated colonies had less food available to them, so could not raise as many new workers. On average, the percentage of workers leaving the colony and then getting lost was 55% higher in those receiving imidacloprid than those that were not exposed to pesticides. The results of this study also indicate that combinatorial exposure to pesticides increases the tendency of bee colonies to fail.

Dr Gill commented that: "The novelty of this study is that we show how the sublethal effects of pesticide exposure affects individual bee behaviour with serious knock-on consequences for the performance of the colony as a whole".

Dr Raine added: "Policymakers need to consider the evidence and work together with regulatory bodies to minimize the risk to all bees caused by pesticides, not just honeybees. Currently pesticide usage is approved based on tests looking at single pesticides. However, our evidence shows that the risk of exposure to multiple pesticides needs to be considered, as this can seriously affect colony success".

Healing Those Stubborn Emotional Wounds | Psych Central

Healing Those Stubborn Emotional WoundsMary was experiencing low self-esteem and worthlessness.

She?d say her eyes were ?broken faucets.? She?d cry often, and would easily get irritated and explode at her children and husband. She had gained weight in the past year. She snacked all day and would finish a bag of chips in minutes without even noticing. She had difficulty concentrating, felt muscle tension, and above all, she was feeling like the ?worst mother in the world.? One day she reported she just wanted to ?escape her world.?

She was not suicidal but just wanted a break. She didn?t see the light at the end of the tunnel any time soon. Sometimes she would say things like ?I feel my heart being crushed. I am a bad person. I am exhausted and ready to quit. Things haven?t gone my way.?

Why was Mary so depressed?

She had a supportive husband and three children. Her husband had a good job and she had not worked outside of the home since she got married. Everyone in her family was in good health ? except her. Her adolescent son was making choices she didn?t like. His latest choices were against the family?s religious values and beliefs. It pained her to see her ?baby? go against what she taught him for seventeen years! She felt like a failure.

Mary was attributing her son?s misbehavior to herself. Intellectually, she agreed her son had a choice. After all, she had taught him about freedom and power to choose. But her guilt kept nagging within her: ?It didn?t do me any good to stay home. Maybe if I had worked outside of the home he would not be so spoiled. I should have been stricter. I should have spent more time with him. I should have home-schooled him.?

There were a lot of regrets, tears, and grief. Her handsome, well-groomed, intelligent, and healthy-looking son was becoming a memory. Things were turning out differently than expected. Her pain was intolerable and she tried to hide it. Arguments, yelling, and silence were only increasing the emotional gap between mother and son.

She was focusing on the half-empty glass.

She rehearsed in her mind all that ?she should have done, should not have done, and could?ve done.? Mary was focusing on the half-empty glass. She could not forgive herself. Her thoughts were getting her deeper and deeper into a black hole. At night she would go over things she had said or may have done in the past that ?could?ve caused? her son to take a different path than what she had anticipated for him.

She found herself in my office at her husband?s request. She actually didn?t believe she needed help. She believed she was a strong woman and could handle any trial. ?After all, isn?t that what life is about? We need to endure our trials, don?t we?? she?d say. I agreed with her, but reminded her enduring to the end doesn?t mean we have to suffer in guilt and pain the rest of our lives. She was experiencing many errors in her thinking.

Mary?s story represents stories from other women I have seen and counseled in my office. Many of them are experiencing emotional pain, difficulty sleeping, concentration problems, anger, regret, guilt, shame, anxiety, fear, loneliness, discouragement, and more.

The good news is that there is hope, People who suffer from depression and anxiety disorders can learn the skills to overcome their challenges.

Mary learned what was going on in her body and determined she needed to see her physician for medication. She made a plan to improve her physical condition by eating healthier and exercising. She learned relaxation skills such as progressive muscle relaxation techniques, visual imagery, and simple mindfulness exercises. Her sleeping habits also needed some readjustment.

She had forgotten to take care of herself and find joy. She took small steps to attain goals to develop new hobbies. She resumed activities she had abandoned. She had previously believed that she should focus all her time and attention to help her son figure things out. She realized her son needed to do most of the work. She finally recognized how her thinking errors and self-defeating beliefs had affected her emotions negatively. She identified the source of her negative core beliefs. She was able to change them by working diligently outside the weekly sessions. She learned a series of writing exercises and became an avid writer; that contributed to her healing also.

If you can relate to Mary?s feelings, remember there are answers ? there always are. Talk to a loved one you can trust. He or she can help you find the right therapist for you. It is possible to have joy despite the trials and challenges of life.

General information on Ylcea

Languages: Id-Heren and Spelheim have distinct languages. Most Id-Herans speak Citian, however. Socharev usually speak both languages. Algam has its own tongue, but mysteriously, it shares a large part of its grammar with Citian. Citians pick up the Algam language fairly easily, and the reverse is also true.

Mingling: some mingling and migration does occur between the two human countries. You will see some Citian red hair in Id-Heren, and some Id-Heran blond in the City. Socharev can be just about anywhere, but it is unlikely for them to hold positions of power. These people are a target for discrimination, but with the recent emergence of humanity's common enemy in the beasts, this has decreased somewhat.

Money: Coins are primarily used in the two human capitals, though the larger Towns in Spelheim may also use them. Id-Heren has its own currency, but Citian coins are accepted everywhere. The two countries' coins are roughly equivalent in weight - in daily life, a copper piece from one country is worth the same as the other. Some may insist on Citian coinage though, as it is the more powerful.
Coppers, bronze and brass make up the lowest currency, and are used for daily necessities. A silver piece would already be more than a commoner's weekly pay, and gold is reserved for the nobility.
The rest of the humans simply trade goods and favors. Algam, too, functions under a system of favors and cooperation.

More to be added here, undoubtedly.

Obama Turns From Jokes to 'Romnesia' Jab

If for a moment Thursday night, President Obama and Mitt Romney could enjoy a brief respite from an otherwise contentious campaign, by today they had put away their jokes and were back to practicing their jabs.

After an evening spent in white ties and tails at the Al Smith dinner gently ribbing each other, the tone of those jokes today turned much more pointed, as the two men readied for their third and final debate in Florida on Monday.

At an event at George Mason University today, the president was still making jokes, but they carried a punch.

"[Romney is] changing up so much and backtracking and side stepping we've got to name this condition he's going through," said the president.

"I think it's called?'Romnesia,'" he added to cheers and laughter. "I'm not a medical doctor, but I do want to go over some of the symptoms with you because I want to make sure nobody else catches it."

After stumping in Virginia today, the president will spend the weekend at Camp David preparing for the debate.

Romney headed to Boca Raton, site of the debate where he will hold a fundraiser and then begin another round of debate prep.

The debates this year have taken on an outsize importance and as the races tightens the stakes for Monday's faceoff could not be higher. Following their first matchup, Mitt Romney received his most significant bump in the polls all year. And following the second debate, Obama had his best day of fundraising ever, including the 2008 campaign.

"This race is close," said Albert May, a professor of political communication at George Washington University. "Anything that moves the polls a point or two is going to be important."

Joking aside, Monday's debate will focus on foreign policy, an area of expertise on which the president has traditionally polled better.

Last week's debate, however, exposed a chink in the president's record, particularly when it came to his understanding and announcing the causes for the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead.

A new report out today suggests that the CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of the attack that there was evidence that terrorists were behind the assault. Romney has scored points on foreign policy by criticizing the president for not quickly and categorically ascribing the attack to terrorists.

"Of course the debate is important," said a Romney campaign staffer unauthorized to speak for attribution. "Given the president's shifting record on Libya, I imagine it will come up in a debate on foreign policy."

"On Monday, the President will discuss how he's kept his promise to the American people to end the war in Iraq in a responsible way, refocus on al-Qaeda, and put forward a plan to end the war in Afghanistan. In contrast, all that Mitt Romney has offered in blunder and bluster. He said he wouldn't move heaven and earth to get bin Laden. He called Russia, rather than al-Qaeda, our number one foe," said an Obama staffer on background.

"And he has failed to outline a plan to end the war in Afghanistan and even said he would have left tens of thousands of troops in Iraq. We need a President who not only keeps us safe in the world, but also understands the need for steady leadership and keeping us out of endless wars. On these points, Mitt Romney has failed," said the Obama staffer. "This debate might not have as much impact as the first debate, largely because they've tested each other," said May. "It also might not just be about foreign policy, and it won't be just about Libya. They'll talk about Libya, China and Russia. Few elections turn on debates, there haven't been many elections that turn on foreign policy."

According to a comprehensive Gallup study, only two debates between 1960 and 2004 moved the meter and quantifiably changed the direction of the polls and the outcome of the election.

But this year's debates seem to be altering the electoral landscape.

Following the first debate two weeks ago, and a lackluster performance by Obama, Romney saw a sustained bounce in the polls, drawing him close to Obama or putting him ahead of the president nationally, according to a flurry of polls.

The Obama campaign was bolstered today by fresh NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls that found Obama with healthy leads in two key swing states, holding a 51-43 lead over Romney in Iowa and a 51-45 lead in Wisconsin.

The debates matter in another way. President Obama had his best fundraising day ever following last week's debate in New York, according to the AP.

The AP also crunched the numbers to reveal the biggest campaign contributors. Both candidates have big name backers. Hollywood director Jeffrey Katzenberg, Obama's single biggest contributor, gave the campaign $2.5 million. And Sheldon Adelson, who has said he would be willing to give Romney $100 million, cashes in as his biggest supporter with a whopping $34.2 million.

AB BAND, Afghanistan (AP) ? Fed up with the Taliban closing their schools and committing other acts of oppression, men in a village about 100 miles south of Kabul took up arms late last spring and chased out the insurgents with no help from the Afghan government or U.S. military.

Small-scale revolts in recent months like the one in Kunsaf, mostly along a stretch of desert south of the Afghan capital, indicate bits of a grass-roots, do-it-yourself anti-insurgency that the U.S. hopes Afghan authorities can transform into a wider movement. Perhaps it can undercut the Taliban in areas they still dominate after 11 years of war with the United States and NATO allies.

The effort in Ghazni Province looks like a long shot. The villagers don't readily embrace any outside authority, be it the Taliban, the U.S. or the Afghan government.

American officials nonetheless are quietly nurturing the trend, hoping it might become a game changer, or at least a new roadblock for the Taliban. At the same time, they are adamant that if anyone can convince the villagers to side with the Afghan government, it's the Afghans ? not the Americans.

"If we went out there and talked to them we would taint these groups and it would backfire," said Army Brig. Gen. John Charlton, the senior American adviser to the Afghan military in provinces along the southern approaches to Kabul.

Charlton, who witnessed similar stirrings in Iraq while serving as a commander there in 2007, said that in some cases the Taliban are fighting back fiercely, killing leaders of the armed uprisings. In Kunsaf, for example, the Taliban killed several village fighters in skirmishes as recently as last month, but the Taliban suffered heavy losses and have thus far failed to retake the village.

The American general visited two military bases in the area last week ? one in Ghazni's Ab Band district that was vacated by a U.S. Army brigade as part of September's U.S. troop drawdown, and the other in nearby Gelan district, where Afghan paramilitary police forces are moving in to fill the gap left by the Americans. Charlton found far fewer paramilitary police there than he says are needed; he is nudging the Afghans to get hundreds more into the area to put more pressure on the Taliban in support of the village uprisings.

Charlton said the U.S. and its coalition partners are taking a behind-the-scenes role ? encouraging the Afghans to court the villagers while finding a role for U.S. Special Forces soldiers to forge the villagers into a fighting force as members of the Kabul-sanctioned Afghan Local Police.

Some have compared the apparently spontaneous uprisings to the Iraq war's Anbar Awakening of 2007, in which Sunni Arab tribes in the western province of Anbar turned on al-Qaida in their midst, joined forces with the Americans and dealt a blow that many credit with turning the tide of that conflict. The U.S. armed and paid the tribal fighters and sought to integrate them into Iraqi government forces.

By coincidence, the first localized movement to draw outside attention in Afghanistan was in Ghazni's Andar district, about 100 miles south of Kabul. Thus some U.S. analysts are calling this the Andar Awakening, drawing an Iraq war parallel that even the most optimistic American commanders say is a stretch.

"That just builds some false expectations," said Army Lt. Col. Kevin Lambert, a 1st Infantry Division battalion commander whose area of operations includes Ghazni. He nonetheless is encouraged that after initially balking, the Afghan government is now trying to leverage the Andar unrest. It has installed a new district governor who Lambert said is sympathetic to the uprisings and made changes in the local security forces. It also has authorized a U.S. Special Forces team to work with the villagers.

"It's going to take time, it's not going to be an Anbar (Iraq) sweep," Lambert said. "It is going to be village by village, district by district, and we may not see the results of this for some years."

Senior officers at the U.S. military headquarters sound even more cautious.

"So far what we are not seeing is a coalescing of it into a greater movement," said Australian Maj. Gen. Stephen Day, the plans chief for the international coalition's joint command. He said "nothing as substantial" as the Andar uprising is happening elsewhere in the country.

U.S. officials say there are signs of anti-Taliban resistance, or at least sentiment, in a dozen or more villages in Andar, and at various locations in the nearby districts of Qarabagh, Moqur and Ab Band. There have been small-scale uprisings also in provinces closer to Kabul, including Laghman and Logar.

The question Day says he's asking is, "Is there a golden thread here that we can pull on that will unite them all?"

It is with that possibility in mind ? and an awareness that U.S. influence here is likely to shrink as its forces continue to withdraw ? that the Americans are encouraging the Afghan military to complete a plan dubbed Operation Solidarity to make what it can of this unexpected new opening in Ghazni province. Charlton, the American adviser to the commander of the main Afghan army group in this region, said this should be a major focus for the Afghans over the winter, when harsh weather tends to lessen the pace of combat operations.

The three-stage plan, designed with U.S. assistance and launched by the Afghan 203rd Corps in September, begins with an assessment of individual village uprisings and their potential for success. Those deemed worthy of pursuing are then approached by the Afghan military, in some cases to provide weaponry. Charlton described the third stage as a networking effort "to stitch these groups together into something larger."

Charlton, who was a central player in fostering the Anbar Awakening in Iraq as a brigade commander in the provincial capital of Ramadi in 2007, is notably optimistic about the nascent Afghan uprisings.

"Over the course of the winter, if this thing works out right, these groups will be supported, they will come together a little bit more and by the springtime the insurgency will not have the popular support bases that they are used to having," he said.

Charlton said he's not discouraged by the merely incremental progress thus far.

"To me, the Taliban are doing the same thing that al-Qaida was" in Iraq, he said. "They used these really oppressive, violent tactics that eventually alienate these populations. And I see that same dynamic here," even though that may not be enough to ignite a broader uprising.

"It may not change Afghanistan, but if it can help deny some support bases in Ghazni, we'll take that. That is something we haven't had."
