Cognitive behaviour therapy improves quality of life in children with asthma and anxiety

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? Researchers have found that a programme of cognitive behaviour therapy delivered by nurses to children who had asthma and anxiety improved the children's quality of life scores and reduced the risk of escalation of treatment.

Levels of anxiety and hyperventilation in children with asthma fell and their quality of life improved after a course of behaviour therapy from a nurse-led clinic, research has found.

The therapy included techniques such as mindfulness, where children were encouraged to concentrate on the present moment, rather than worry about what might happen or what has happened before.

Basic cognitive restructuring was also used, which involved looking at recurring detrimental thoughts or anxieties experienced by the children and encouraging them to replace them with more positive thoughts. Some of the thoughts children said might increase their anxiety were: 'I don't like people watching me take my inhaler' and 'the ambulance might not come in time'.

Writing in the journal Nursing Children and Young People, the researchers said early identification of the role of anxiety in asthma could prevent unnecessary escalation of treatment, for example overuse of oral steroids, which has side effects.

'The programme seems to be a cost-effective, rapid access service providing a psychological intervention for all children showing a clinical need,' the researchers said. 'The study also highlights the need for all nursing staff to be aware of the detrimental effects of anxiety on asthma control, so early symptoms can be identified and addressed quickly,' they added.

Sessions also included education about anxiety, for example, an explanation of dysfunctional breathing and the physiological effects it can produce, such as symptoms of hyperventilation. Children were subsequently taught rescue breathing exercises and a variety of general relaxation exercises.

The intervention was conducted by a clinical nurse specialist with basic training in behaviour therapy techniques.

The study was a prospective cohort pilot study and included children between seven and 16 years of age with confirmed asthma who had been diagnosed with health-related anxiety by a treating doctor.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 42.31 points to 12,967.37. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 2.86 to 1,406.29. And the Nasdaq composite index managed a 9.93-point increase to 2,976.78.

Utility?stocks?rose the most, while telecommunications companies fell the most.

The major U.S. economic reports were not due until later in the week, leaving investors to rehash the European debt crisis and talks in Washington over the "cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1.

"The themes seem about as recycled as Thanksgiving turkey," David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds, wrote in a note to clients.

He expected a better read on the economy later this week, with reports on consumer confidence on Tuesday and unemployment claims and third-quarter economic growth on Thursday.

Scott Carmack, co-portfolio manager at Leader Capital in Portland, Oregon, said the decline Monday was all but inevitable after last week, when the Dow climbed 3.3 percent because of encouraging signs from Washington and good economic news overseas.

That made Monday a good day to cash out on last week's gains, Carmack said, especially because traders aren't sure how the fiscal cliff will affect the market for the rest of the year.

"Monday is a good day to take profits," Carmack said. "No one was in on Friday, so they're doing it Monday."

The National Retail Federation reported that 247 million shoppers visited stores and shopping websites during the long Thanksgiving weekend, up 9 percent from a year ago. They spent an average of $423, up 6 percent.

Some worry that the momentum won't last, and that deep discounting will hurt stores. Macy's fell $1.87, or 4.5 percent, to $39.86. Saks dropped 29 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $10.23. Target declined $1.71, or 2.6 percent ,to $62.77.

Abercrombie & Fitch was an exception, rising 21 cents to $44.61.

The cliff cast a pall. A government report released Monday warned that a sudden increase in taxes would crimp the spending of middle class families next year, and some analysts wondered whether families would curb spending before the year is over.

The report, by President Barack Obama's National Economic Council and his Council of Economic Advisers, estimated that a married couple earning between $50,000 and $85,000 with two children would see a $2,200 increase in their taxes.

In Europe, leaders of European Union countries tried to reach a deal to lend more money to debt-crippled Greece. The ministers have failed twice in the last two weeks to reach an agreement to release ?44 billion, or $56.8 billion.

In the U.S., though, "Most of these uncertainties have been with us for quite some time," Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, wrote in a note Monday, "and are now regarded by many as annoyances to resolve rather than obstacles to fear."

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 2 percentage points to 1.66 percent from late Friday.

In other?stock?trading:

? McGraw-Hill announced it would sell its education unit to a private equity firm. The company's?stock?rose 20 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $51.89.

? Facebook?stock?jumped $1.94, or 8.1 percent, to $25.94 after a Bernstein analyst upgraded his rating of the company, predicting it will beat revenue expectations for the near future.

Laurel Family Survives House Fire Sparked During Turkey ...

LAUREL, Md. (WJZ)?A Laurel family is safe after a dangerous turkey related fire that ignited overnight.

Christie Ileto has more on the dangers that come with preparing your Thanksgiving turkey.

The back of Clyde Austin?s home is charred this Thanksgiving?rather than just the turkey he says his daughter was attempting to smoke on their deck Wednesday night.

?Between her watching television and coming out every 10 minutes to check, all of a sudden I heard this ?kaboom,?? Austin said.

Prince George?s and Anne Arundel fire crews say they responded to the home around 11 p.m. Wednesday on the 500- block of Prince George?s Street.

?I saw my whole back deck was on fire,? Austin said.

Neighbors say the flames were so massive they could be seen from blocks away.

?It was unbelievable. I was really, really shaken up,? said Cathy Sansosti, neighbor.

One neighbor captured the fire billowing from the home.

Austin says the flames quickly spread throughout the rear of the home. The family of three escaped out their front door.

Officials say there are several dangers associated with cooking turkeys this holiday, especially when it comes to deep frying a turkey.

Fire crews warn dropping a frozen bird into a hot vat of oil is recipe for disaster.

If you?re going to choose to cook your turkey this way take all the precautions necessary.

In the meantime, Austin and his family are picking up the pieces of what?s left of their home.

?Right now we?re meeting with an adjuster, and trying to see what they have to offer,? he said.

While the Austins celebrate Thanksgiving in their home, they are giving thanks they survived the fire unharmed.

The family says the home has major smoke and water damage, and that it may be months until they can move back.

Stephan Bonnar took steroids to prepare for pro wrestling ? UFC ...

Stephan Bonnar took steroids to prepare for pro wrestling ? UFC News

Former light heavyweight contender of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Stephan Bonnar was recently caught using steroids for his last fight against middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Even though Bonnar was knocked out by the Spider in the very first round, he was tested after the fight for illegal substance and he failed. Weirdly, President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White believes Bonnar did it to train for professional wrestling.

?I haven?t talked to him since. I don?t hate him. I just don?t want to talk to him,? said Dana White on MMA Weekly. ?I think the thing that bums me out the most about the Stephan Bonnar thing is that he didn?t tell me.?

Although White?s explanation for Bonnar does not make sense, he still believes Bonnar did not do it to beat Silva.

Bonnar was planning retirement long before his fight against Silva was announced. When he got to know he had to face Silva, Bonnar was head over heels, believing he could make history by defeating the unbeaten Brazilian fighter.

While Silva crushed Bonnar?s dreams of glory, his own misdeeds spoiled his name even further.

?He wasn?t planning on fighting. He said that he was practicing to maybe do some pro wrestling and whatever the excuse is. I?ve known Stephan for a long time. We have a great relationship. Tell me,? added White.

Bonnar retired from the UFC with a record of 15 wins and 8 losses. He has not provided any explanations for his failed drug tests. The explanation White is providing is a wild assumption. Bonnar his now under one-year suspension, even though he fights for the UFC no more. In other words, he is punished but he is not really under any punishment. If he wishes to make a comeback, that is when he will have to face the consequences of adopting such illegal measures.

For now, Bonnar is probably in peace as he has nothing to do with the UFC anymore. If White is right, we will be seeing Bonnar in professional wrestling soon enough. Hopefully, he will not be on steroids by then.

U.S. ITC will review Apple, Samsung patent decision

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. International Trade Commission will review a judge's decision which found that Apple did not violate patents owned by Samsung Electronics in making the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.

An administrative law judge at the ITC had said in a preliminary ruling in September that Apple was innocent of violating the patents. The ITC, which could have opted to simply uphold the judge's decision, said that it would take up the matter. A final decision is expected in January.

If Apple is found to infringe, its devices can be banned for sale in the United States.

Apple and Samsung have taken their bruising patent disputes to some 10 countries as they vie for market share in the booming mobile industry.

Apple won a huge victory in August when a U.S. jury found the South Korean firm had copied key features of the iPhone. Apple was awarded $1.05 billion in damages. That ruling is under appeal.

In its announcement that it would review the case, the ITC asked for briefings on how it should consider standard essential patents, which are normally expected to be licensed widely and on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. The use of standards helps companies ensure devices are interoperable.

Some antitrust enforcers have argued that it is wrong for companies which own standard essential patents to ask for infringing devices to be barred from the country except in extreme instances.

The commission is reviewing a decision by ITC Judge James Gildea, who said in September that Apple did not violate the four patents at issue in the case, which was filed in mid-2011.

The two standard essential patents in the complaint are related to 3G wireless technology and the format of data packets for high-speed transmission.

Apple has a parallel complaint filed against Samsung at the ITC, accusing Samsung, a major Apple chip provider as well as a global rival, of blatantly copying its iPhones and iPads. An ITC judge said in that case that Samsung infringed on four Apple patents. The full ITC will issue a final decision in February.

Apple has waged an international patent war since 2010 as it seeks to limit growth of Google's Android system. The fight has embroiled Samsung, HTC and others who use Android.

Google's Android software, which Apple's late founder Steve Jobs denounced as a "stolen product," has become the world's No. 1 smartphone operating system.

Samsung is the world's largest smartphone maker, while Apple is in third place. Many experts consider Samsung's Galaxy touchscreen tablets the main rival to the iPad, although they are currently a distant second to Apple's devices.

Samsung is also a parts supplier to Apple, producing micro processors, flat screens and memory chips - both dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips and NAND memory chips - for the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Apple has reduced orders from Samsung for chips and screens.

The case at the International Trade Commission is No. 337-794.

Heartbreak Mending and the Deep, Multi-Love Remedy | What is ...

HeartbreakSynopsis: Heartbreak and the fallacy of time mending; heartbreak defined; heartbreak?s secret benefits; heartbreak?s dangers, and five things you can do that are likely to help are all covered in this mini-love-lesson.

Heartbreak And the Fallacy of Time Mending

We all can become heartbroken from the loss of a loved one or the loss of love itself.? Loss can come from a breakup, divorce, a death, abandonment, betrayal, a severe lasting estrangement, a major defeat in life where someone or something you truly love is lost and also by experiencing a severe contradiction to your understanding of how love is to be carried out in your life.? Wherever there is love there is the potential for love loss and, therefore, heartbreak.

The good news is wherever there is heartbreak there is the potential for heart mending.? Without mending, heartbreak can destroy people?s lives or at least large segments of people?s lives.? Therefore, knowing how to assist and hurry the mending process is very important.? Some say time alone will cure heartbreak but that is not true.? More accurately it is that given enough time we slowly, eventually may stumble across some of the things that bring about mending.? It?s what happens ?in the time? that makes the difference and, while for many it?s very slow, the process can be hurried somewhat when you know certain actions to take.

There are people who get stuck in their brokenhearted living and stay there for the rest of their lives, not recovering at all.? You do not have to be one of them, nor do those you care about.

What Is Heartbreak

Heartbreak can be defined as intense, emotionally painful, overwhelming and seemingly crushing distress, grief and ongoing agony over the loss of a major, love involvement.? One of the major functions of love is that it brings us into deep, heartfelt connection with the loved.

Another major, love function is that love provides us with vital, psychological, life nourishment.? When our connection to life nourishing love is lost we become at risk. Depression, despair, fear, anxiety, grief, loss of will to live, loss of energy, loss of functionality, and a sense of profound agony and emptiness can result.? These are some aspects of what true heartbreak is.

Heartbreak is seen as a more severe form of heartache, heart sorrow, having an empty heart and other terms indicating hurt is occurring over the absence, or loss, or distancing of someone or something loved.

To be truly heartbroken is a serious and dangerous condition though the term heartbreak and heartbroken are often inaccurately used to indicate milder forms of disappointment and disillusionment, usually connected to romance.? Heartbreak also can be understood as a serious, pathological, neurochemical imbalance occurring in the brain following the loss or severance an important love relationship.

Heartbreak?s Secret Benefits

Having a broken heart may tell you a lot about what you need to know.? It may tell you that the way you are going about love needs an overhaul.? The agony of a broken heart may tell you that who you are choosing, or who you are letting choose you for love relating may need some drastic change.

Heartache and heartbreak from the loss of a love may tell you how important love is in your life, and to give love much more serious attention, and not take it for granted.? Heartbreak may persuade you to expand the number of sources and kinds of real, healthy love relationships in your life.? Heartbreak can tell you to get yourself repaired and then learn how not to be so vulnerable and susceptible, but instead be stronger and more able to cope with love gone wrong.? That usually points to the need for considerable, healthy, self-love improvements.

Heartbreak often is what it takes for a person to finally re-orient and re-direct their lives into more healthy and constructive pathways.? For many people without having experienced serious, broken heart problems they never would have given love enough thought to learn how to do it well.

Heartbreak?s Dangers

Heartbreak can be quite dangerous.? Love loss can and often does bring on serious, suicidal depression.? It also can trigger major abandonment feelings and fears, and a sense of being lost in life.? Heartbreak may result in a retreat from life and an overly defeated, self protective lifestyle.? It can lower your immunity system defenses and make you vulnerable to infectious diseases, and it can cause or exacerbate stress illnesses like heart attacks and strokes.

Heartbreak is known to cause people to turn to various addictions for escape from the pain of heartbreak, although the pain still is there undealt with.? Heartbreak also is thought to be a major cause of addiction relapses.? So, if you are suffering or if someone you care about is grieving with a ?broken heart? watch for these danger signs and get real help.

None of these need be your result.? Most people recover from heartbreak.? Most people who get help recover faster, and sooner, and also more thoroughly.

What Helps

One approach to recovering from heartbreak is to take a deep, multi-love approach.? This means purposefully developing your healthy, real love of life, others, self, spiritual love, possibly family love, friendship love, possibly the love of a cause or a worthy involvement, and then throwing yourself into those loves.? Later you can learn to give yourself a chance at a love, similar to the love you have missing from your life, but go about it in a more likely to succeed manner.

In my work with the families of murdered children, those recovering from divorces and breakups, widows and widowers striving to recover, sole survivors of family tragedies, and in my own former recovering from love loss I have found five things that particularly can help many people get started on a path to recovery.? It takes hard work, but it?s easier than living without healthy, real love in your life.

Here are five things that you, or those you care about, can do to help recover from heartbreak:

1.??? Go to counseling with a very loving, love-centered counselor or therapist.
2.??? Get yourself into daily psycho-educational experiences about love, and love relationships, and everything that?s related.? This means read about healthy real love, watch video presentations, listen to audio talks, journal, search the Internet, go to classes, workshops, seminars, retreats and anything else you can find that relates to learning the how to?s of healthy, real love.
3.??? Immediately, but very slowly, and in small steps involve yourself in all sorts of other love and love potential relationships with pets, friends, positive family members, groups of people who are or may be positive and loving.
4.??? Increasingly do anything and everything that is potentially distracting and which later may have the potential for being enjoyable.? Start with spectator events like going to happy movies, and then later get involved in things that move your muscles a lot because motion helps change emotion usually for the better.? Even the mildest and briefest of distractions from emotional pain are useful in helping you heal and are likely to help you grow stronger the longer you repeat them.
5.??? Slowly and in small steps immediately get into increasingly healthful living.? Exercise, healthy diet (including some strictly pleasurable comfort foods, especially chocolate, a mood elevator, are okay in small amounts), affirmations work, meditation, prayer, yoga, art, sports, upbeat music, nature, etc. all can be part of a healthful lifestyle.? These things first can be first done alone if you prefer, and then later with others doing similar things.? Get a physician?s help, and other health professional?s assistance, and possibly a trainer who may help with motivation. All this can be part of your healthy, self-love program.

This outline is much too brief but is aimed at helping you to get going toward heartbreak recovery, or to help someone you care about who is suffering a broken heart.? It points the way toward a ?path that many have traveled? to full, heartbreak recovery and beyond.

As always ? Go and Grow with Love

U.S. soldier to hear charges for 2009 Iraq shootings

TACOMA, Washington (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier accused of killing five fellow servicemen at a military combat stress center in Baghdad in 2009 will face an arraignment at a military base in Washington state on Monday, preparing the way for a trial that could result in the death penalty.

Sergeant John Russell, of the 54th Engineer Battalion based in Bamberg, Germany, is accused of going on a shooting spree at Camp Liberty, near the Baghdad airport, in an assault the military said at the time could have been triggered by combat stress.

The soldier faces five charges of premeditated murder, one charge of aggravated assault and one charge of attempted murder in connection with the May 2009 shootings. Six months ago, he was ordered to stand trial in a military court empowered to assign the death penalty if convicted.

Two of the five people killed in the shooting were medical staff officers at the counseling center for troops experiencing combat stress. The others were soldiers.

It is not known how Russell will plead after hearing the charges against him. An Army spokesman said Russell was expected to be in court during the arraignment. Russell's attorney, James Culp, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. No trial date has been set.

The arraignment, scheduled to take place at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, Washington, comes at a sensitive time for the Army, which is in the process of deciding how to prosecute Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, the soldier accused of killing Afghan villagers in cold blood earlier this year.

A two-week hearing at Lewis-McChord to establish if there is sufficient evidence to send Bales to a court-martial wrapped up last week, after harrowing testimony from Afghan adults and children wounded in the attack.

Bales' civilian defense lawyers have suggested he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, an argument that has already played a role in Russell's case.

In the days following the Iraq shooting, Admiral Mike Mullen, then chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the incident highlighted the risks of multiple deployments on soldiers and underlined the need to redouble efforts to deal effectively with combat stress.

Russell's attorney wrote in a memo this year his client was "facing death because the Army's mental health system failed him."

Army Colonel James Pohl, who presided over a preliminary hearing in the case last year at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, had called the death penalty an "inappropriate" punishment for Russell because of combat trauma concerns. That view was not shared by the Army's General Court-Martial Convening Authority, which referred the case as a capital crime in May.

At the time, an Army spokesman said that decision was made because of the severity of what he called "blue-on-blue" killings.

A recent Army study estimated as many as 20 percent of the more than 2 million U.S. troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan could suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Before the shooting, Russell's commander had determined that Russell should have his weapon taken away. (Reporting By Laura L. China's Xi warns party of corruption scourge

BEIJING (AP) ? China's new leader Xi Jinping is highlighting corruption as a scourge that could bring down the Communist Party, though he has yet to offer any specific new proposals to stop it.

In a weekend speech that was carried Monday by the official Xinhua News Agency, Xi told the new 25-member Politburo that the party must be vigilant against graft, noting that corruption in other countries in recent years has prompted major social unrest and the collapse of governments.

"The large number of facts tells us that if the problem of corruption becomes increasingly severe, it will lead to the ruin of the party and the country!" Xinhua quoted Xi as saying in a speech that can be read as an indication of the priorities of the incoming administration.

Xi's language was unusually direct for a top leader, indicating his seriousness about the problem, but his speech gave few indications of how the party could better police itself, said Jean-Pierre Cabestan, a political scientist at Hong Kong Baptist University.

"He used strong words. It was clearly a warning: 'We have to do something about this,'" Cabestan said. "Clearly, for him, the crux of the matter is corruption. The trouble is, of course, that he doesn't tell us much about what are going to be the efficient tools or weapons he will put together to fight corruption."

Several corruption investigations have targeted high-level leaders in recent years, most notably former Politburo member Bo Xilai, who was purged this year after an aide disclosed that Bo's wife murdered a British businessman. Bo is accused of obstructing the investigation into the murder as well as unspecified corruption while in office.

Foreign media, meanwhile, have reported in recent weeks that the families of Chinese leaders have accumulated enormous wealth.

Xi urged officials at all levels to obey anti-corruption regulations and to better limit their relatives or associates from abusing their influence for personal gain, but he gave no indication of any independent mechanism for investigating graft.

The party, which controls courts, police and prosecutors, has proved feeble in policing itself yet does not want to undermine its control by empowering an independent body. Some officials have been required to report income, real estate holdings and other wealth to their superiors since 2010, but the measure has done little to staunch graft.

Xi took over as China's top leader last Thursday when he assumed the posts of party leader and head of the military commission from President Hu Jintao. Hu will retain the title of president ? the ceremonial head of state ? until next spring, when he hands that position to Xi as well.

Xi has been gradually replacing key Hu-appointed party officials.

On Monday, former public security minister Meng Jianzhu was named head of the Political Science and Law Commission that oversees police and the courts, replacing Zhou Yongkang.

Zhao Leji, the former party boss of the northern province of Shaanxi, was named the new head of the Organization Department responsible for key government and party appointments. He takes over from Li Yuanchao, a Hu ally who last week failed to gain a seat on the all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee.

In his remarks to the Politburo, Xi dwelled on the importance of the party's theoretical foundations in Marxism, Leninism and the ideas espoused by his predecessors, but his remarks on corruption stood out for being relatively free of political jargon.

Xi also emphasized the need to narrow the gap between the party and the people in what seemed like an implicit critique of his predecessors, said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Lam said Xi's frequent references to "the people" in his speech indicated that "the past two decades have resulted somehow in the people feeling alienated from the party."

"Now what he's saying is that from day one is that we shall stick to the people. We will do what the people want," Lam said.

Google Maps For iOS Nearing Release : WSJ

how to get google maps back ios6 0 580x386 Google Maps For iOS Nearing Release : WSJ

Google Maps for iOS is almost ready for release to Apple?s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices,?reports the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The WSJ?report?uses information from someone knowledgeable about Google Maps software development. The source reveals that Google handed out a test version of a new Google Maps for iOS app to put final changes before submitting it to the Apple App Store.

While it?s expected that Google?s iOS Maps will include walking and transit directions, the WSJ?s source claims that Google will also bundle its turn-by-turn navigation feature, available free on all Android devices, in the app. This would bring the functionality to par with Apple Maps, which is why some pundits still think Apple will not approve the app when it is submitted.

Google Maps for iOS could see the company derive a huge amount of revenue from sponsored business listings and other product tie-ins. But while it?s possible to change default apps in Android, Apple Maps will continue to be the default service used within third-party apps.

Google apps such as YouTube, Google+ and Search are available on iOS, and are very popular despite not being integrated directly into the operating system. Apple would not comment on the matter, but it would seem likely that they view Google?s services as a thorn in its proverbial side.

Medics: Israel strike kills 11 civilians in Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? An Israeli missile flattened a two-story house in a residential neighborhood of Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 11 civilians, mostly women and children, Palestinian medical officials said, as Israel expanded a military offensive to target homes of wanted militants.

The attack, which Israel said targeted a militant, was the single deadliest incident of the five-day-old Israeli operation and hiked a toll Sunday that was already the highest number of civilians killed in one day, according to Gaza medics. The bloodshed is likely to raise international pressure for a cease-fire, with Egypt taking the leading role in mediating between Israel and Hamas.

President Barack Obama said he had been in touch with the leaders of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey in an effort to halt the fighting. "We're going to have to see what kind of progress we can make in the next 24, 36, 48 hours," he said.

Obama cautioned against a potential Israeli ground invasion into Gaza, warning it could only deepen its death toll. At the same time, he blamed Palestinian militants for starting the round of fighting by raining rockets onto Israel, and he defended Israel's right to defend itself.

"Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory," Obama said in Thailand at the start of a three-nation tour in Asia.

An Israeli envoy arrived in Cairo on Sunday and held talks with Egyptian officials on a ceasefire, according to Egyptian security officials and Nabil Shaath, a top aide of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who was in the Egyptian capital.

But Israel and Gaza's militant Hamas rulers remain far apart on any terms for a halt in the bloodshed, which has killed 70 Palestinians ? including 36 civilians, according to Gaza health officials ? and three Israeli civilians.

Hamas is linking a truce deal to a complete lifting of the border blockade on Gaza imposed since Islamists seized the territory by force. Hamas also seeks Israeli guarantees to halt targeted killings of its leaders and military commanders. Israeli officials reject such demands. They say they are not interested in a "timeout," and want firm guarantees that militant rocket fire into Israel will finally end. Past ceasefires have been short lived.

As the offensive moved forward, Israel found itself at a crossroads ? on the cusp of launching a ground offensive into Gaza to strike an even tougher blow against Hamas, or pursuing Egyptian-led truce efforts.

"The Israeli military is prepared to significantly expand the operation," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting.

At the same time, Gaza militants continued their barrage of rocket fire at Israel, firing more than 100, including two at Tel Aviv. More than 10 Israelis were injured by shrapnel, two moderately, according to police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld. Israel's "Iron Dome" rocket-defense system shot down at least 30 rockets, including the ones aimed at Tel Aviv.

Israel's announcement Sunday that it was widening its campaign to target homes of militants appeared to mark a new and risky phase of the operation, given the likelihood of civilian casualties in the densely populated territory of 1.5 million Palestinians. Israel launched the offensive Wednesday in a bid to end months of intensifying rocket fire from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

The day's deadliest strike hit the home of the Daloo family in Gaza City, reducing the structure to rubble.

Frantic rescuers pulled the bodies of several children from the ruins of the house, including a toddler and a 5-year-old, as survivors and bystanders screamed in grief. Later, the bodies of the children were laid out in the morgue of Gaza City's Shifa Hospital.

Among the 11 dead were four small children and five women, including an 80-year-old, Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said.

Israeli military spokesman Brig Gen. Yoav Mordechai told Channel 2 TV that the Israeli navy had targeted the building and killed a "global jihad" militant.

"The targets are exact," Mordechai said. "Every (Israeli) missile has an address."

He said the army would continue its operation "as if there were no (cease-fire) talks in Egypt."

The presence of a militant in the house could not be verified. Al-Kidra said the two adult men killed in the strike were civilians.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman, said that "the Israeli people will pay the price" for the killing of civilians. One of the rocket attacks targeting Tel Aviv came soon after the strike on the Daloo home.

More than a dozen homes of Hamas commanders or families linked to Hamas were struck on Sunday. Though most were empty ? their inhabitants having fled to shelter ? at least three still had families in them. Al-Kidra said 19 of the 24 people killed Sunday were civilians, mostly women and children.

Israeli Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon said civilian casualties are inevitable.

"You can't avoid collateral damage if they position the rockets in densely populated areas, in mosques, school yards. We shouldn't be blamed for the outcome," he said.

Israel also struck two high-rise buildings housing media outlets, damaging the top floor offices of the Hamas TV station, Al Aqsa, and a Lebanese-based broadcaster, Al Quds TV, seen as sympathetic to the Islamists. Six Palestinian journalists were wounded, including one who lost a leg, a Gaza press association said.

Foreign broadcasters, including British, German and Italian TV outlets, also had offices in the high-rises.

Two missiles made a direct hit on Al Aqsa TV's 15th floor offices, said Bassem Madhoun, an employee of Dubai TV, which has offices in the same building.

Building windows were blown out and glass shards and debris were scattered on the street below. Some of the journalists who had been inside the building at the time took cover in the entrance hallway.

Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military spokeswoman, said the strikes targeted Hamas communications equipment on the buildings' rooftops. She accused the group of using journalists as "human shields," and urged journalists to stay clear of Hamas bases and facilities.

The repeated militant rocket fire on Tel Aviv and a volley fired Friday toward Jerusalem have significantly escalated the hostilities by widening the militants' rocket range and putting 3.5 million Israelis, or half the country's population, within reach. The attempt to strike Jerusalem also has symbolic resonance because both Israel and the Palestinians claim the holy city for a capital.

Israeli radio stations repeatedly interrupted their broadcasts to air "Code Red" alerts warning of impending rocket strikes. In the southern city of Ashkelon, rocket fire damaged a residential building, punching a hole in the ceiling and riddling the facade with shrapnel.

With fighting showing no signs of slowing, international attempts to broker a ceasefire continued.

Nabil Shaath, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who was in Cairo, confirmed that the Israeli envoy had arrived in Egypt for talks, saying there are "serious attempts to reach a ceasefire." There was no immediate Israeli confirmation.

Hamas' prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, spoke to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi. He told the Egyptian leader he supports such efforts, provided Hamas receives "guarantees that will prevent any future aggression" by Israel, his office said in a statement.

Morsi over the weekend hosted talks with Hamas' supreme leader, as well as leaders from Hamas allies Turkey and Qatar. He also held contacts with Western leaders.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius visited Israel on Sunday to offer his country's help toward forging an "immediate ceasefire," the French government said.

Meeting with Fabius, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman thanked him for "France's efforts to prevent casualties" but said "the moment that all the terror organizations announce a ceasefire, we can consider all the ideas that French foreign minister and other friends are raising."

Why yawning is contagious in bonobos

Friday, November 16, 2012

Being socially close to another bonobo is more likely to make bonobo apes yawn in response to the other's yawns, according to research published November 14 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Elisabetta Palagi and Elisa Demuru from the University of Pisa, Italy.

The researchers found that yawning in bonobos is more contagious when individuals are strongly bonded to one another as kin or close friends. They also found that yawn contagion was higher when individuals were more relaxed, but occurred in every context when the first yawner was a senior member of the group.

Previous research has found similar results in humans, showing that a person is more likely to yawn when family or close friends do, rather than in response to a stranger's yawning. Though this social component of yawn contagion is well-known, its origins and significance are still being studied.

Yawn contagion may be a way for social groups to unconsciously communicate and coordinate activities, but unlike other forms of unconscious communication, has a unique emotional component, since it appears to occur more frequently between closely bonded individuals. The authors say, "Though we are still far from a clear demonstration of a link between yawn contagion and empathy, the importance of social bonds in shaping this phenomenon in bonobos suggests that a basic form of empathy may play a role in modulating yawning behavior."

Wright Here: Good reasons to give thanks : The Bastrop Advertiser

Last weekend, my sisters and I met up in San Antonio for a sisters? reunion. We haven?t been together since the lastcyndi for column time we took my brother camping, prior to his death last February of a brain tumor.

We did that special camping trip around this same time of year, maybe a little earlier. Even though by that time Robb was confined to a wheelchair, he had a great time up on his favorite river, the Guadalupe. We rented a cabin, drank some beer, made friends with other campers and hung out. We took Robb to The Salt Lick ? another of his favorite spots ? and had some great barbecue.

Robb hung in there for two years after his diagnosis. The doctors told him he had ? on the outside ? nine months. He found it really funny when I told him the reason he wasn?t dying on schedule was because our family was like weeds ? very difficult, if not impossible, to kill.

Anyway, he passed close to Valentine?s Day. I guess it?s taken some time for us siblings left behind to regroup. As anyone who has been the caregiver ? or is currently the caregiver ? for someone who is dying, it?s not an easy road. My brother didn?t have any money. His only desire for his time left was to sit on the front porch of his friend?s house, watch the deer, drink beer and listen to music. But dying takes money. Of course, with Medicaid he qualified for a lot of stuff ? his medications (and there were a lot) were free. Meals on Wheels ? they were great. But, as time went on and he deteriorated, we needed to find money if we wanted to keep him in his friend?s house because he needed full-time caregivers. Of course, we all took turns, even our sweet husbands stayed with Robb, but we all have jobs and family commitments, as well. He lived up in the woods of Pipe Creek, far from any of us so taking a turn meant packing a suitcase for a couple of days and nights. Some of his close friends also stepped up and took their turns but as it went on, it became clear we were not going to be able to continue it indefinitely. Bringing him to our homes was not an answer since he got to the point where he could not be left alone.

Well, we scrounged and borrowed and pleaded and felt our hearts? breaking, but we managed to keep him at his home until Medicare kicked in and we could move him to a ?nice? nursing home. He hated it there, of course. No-one wants to be the youngest person in a nursing home.

But we all trooped up there to visit him on a regular basis. Friends and family, there was usually someone there keeping him company, bringing him a taco or a burger and just hanging out.

So, last weekend, the siblings left behind ?hung out? as a group for the first time since we last ?hung out? with Robb. It was not planned to be on Veterans Day weekend, but that?s the way it ended up. As we reminisced about our lost family members we made a special trip to Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery to remember our dad, who died five years ago, and our mom, who died in 1992.

We had a great time. We celebrated those we have loved and lost and we made time to be thankful for those we still have ? and especially each other. As we come into the season for giving thanks, I?m reminded that I?m a pretty lucky gal to have such great sisters, friends, children, grandchildren, husband, workmates and more. I hope that everyone finds some reason to give thanks.
