Pope leads Easter Mass in St. Peter's Square

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis is celebrating his first Easter Sunday Mass as pontiff in St. Peter's Square, which is packed by joyous pilgrims, tourists and Romans.

Francis strode onto the flower-bedecked esplanade in front of St. Peter's Basilica. Tens of thousands of faithful had already filled the square hours before the Mass began in mid-morning. Francis bowed his head in reflection as the Gospel was sung in Latin, recounting what Christians believe is the central mystery of their faith ? the resurrection of Jesus after this death by crucifixion.

A white canopy sheltered the altar on the steps. After heavy rain battered Rome during the night, more was forecast. But Sunday saw sunny skies alternate with clouds.

After Mass ends, Francis will give his blessing and speech from the basilica's balcony.

Eiffel Tower evacuated after bomb threat

(AP) ? The Eiffel Tower was evacuated Saturday night after an anonymous caller phoned in a bomb threat, police said.

Nearly 1,400 people were sent away from the tourist attraction following a request from tower operators after the warning, a Paris police official said. Police then searched the monument with sniffer dogs, and set up a security perimeter.

No explosives were found and the site was to be reopened, the official said on condition of anonymity because she wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

French authorities have stepped up counterterrorism measures in recent weeks amid heightened concern about threats to France over its military campaign against al-Qaida-linked fighters in Mali which began more than two months ago.

The tower is occasionally evacuated because of such warnings ? at least once last year and twice in 2011. The 324-meter (1,063-foot) tower is one of the world's top tourist attractions, with millions of visitors a year.

Syrian rebels enter strategic Aleppo neighborhood

BEIRUT (AP) ? Activists say Syrian rebels have taken control of at least part of a strategic neighborhood in the northern city of Aleppo after days of heavy fighting.

The Aleppo Media Center opposition group and Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed say rebels seized control of the predominantly Kurdish neighborhood of Sheik Maqsoud in its entirety late Friday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, however, says rebels took only the eastern part of the neighborhood, and reported heavy fighting there Saturday.

The Observatory also said rebels captured a pro-government Sunni Muslim cleric, killed him, then paraded his body around the neighborhood.

State-run Al-Ikhbariya TV identified the cleric as Hassan Seifeddine. It said he was beheaded and his head was placed on the minaret of Al-Hassan Mosque where he used to lead the prayers.

Hard-Boiled Tips For Easter Eggs, Passover Food Safety - CBS Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) ? If you?re planning an Easter egg hunt or cooking eggs for your Passover Seder, USDA has important advice to help you keep your family safe from foodborne illness throughout the Spring celebrations.

Susan Conley, director of Food Safety Education for USDA?s Food Safety and Inspection Service, said hard-boiled eggs for Easter and Passover celebrations should be prepared with care.

If you plan to eat the Easter eggs you decorate, be sure to use only food grade dye. Some people even?make two sets of eggs ? one for decorating and hiding, another for eating ? while others use plastic eggs for hiding.

For an Easter egg hunt, avoid cracking the egg shells. If the shells crack, bacteria could enter and contaminate the egg inside. Also, try to?hide eggs in places that are protected from dirt, pets and other bacteria sources. Conley said it?s especially important to keep hard-boiled eggs chilled in the refrigerator until just before the hunt.

The total time for hiding and hunting eggs should be no more than two hours. Then be sure to refrigerate the ?found? eggs right away until you eat them. Eggs found hours later or the next day should be thrown out, not eaten.

Eggs also play and important role on the Seder plate during Passover celebrations. If that egg sits out at room temperature for more than two hours, it should not be eaten. Since the hard-boiled eggs that are usually served to each person as part of the special dinner are meant to be eaten, keep those eggs in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

When shell eggs are hard-boiled, the protective coating is washed away, leaving open pores in the shell where harmful bacteria could enter. Be sure to refrigerate eggs within two hours of cooking and use them within a week. Check your refrigerator temperature with an appliance thermometer and adjust the refrigerator temperature to 40?F?or below.

For egg safety, to stay healthy and avoid foodborne illness, USDA advises:

  • Always buy eggs from a refrigerated case. Choose eggs with clean, uncracked shells
  • Buy eggs before the ?Sell-By? or ?EXP? (expiration) date on the carton
  • Take eggs straight home from the grocery store and refrigerate them right away. Check to be sure your refrigerator is set at 40?F or below. Don?t take eggs out of the carton to put them in the refrigerator ? the carton protects them. Keep the eggs in the coldest part of the refrigerator ? not on the door.
  • Raw shell eggs in the carton can stay in your refrigerator for three to five weeks from the purchase date. Although the ?Sell-By? date might pass during that time, the eggs are still safe to use.
  • Always wash your hands with warm water and soap before and after handling raw eggs. To avoid cross-contamination, you should also wash forks, knives, spoons and all counters and other surfaces that touch the eggs with hot water and soap.
  • Don?t keep raw or cooked eggs out of the refrigerator more than two hours.
  • Egg dishes such as deviled eggs or egg salad should be used within 3 to 4 days.

What?s Up With Amanda Bynes?

As of late, Amanda Bynes has not only been posting increasingly odd and inappropriate tweets, but has been displaying a lot of odd behavior as well. The 26 year old actress was pictured walking through New York?s Times Square, which wouldn?t be that weird? if she wasn?t pretending to be a ghost while holding a blue shirt over her head. Maybe she was trying to conceal her identity and got a little carried away? I mean, I get people like to play pretend every once and a while, but this is just taking it a little too far. The star was also pictured leaving McDonalds where she ordered a soft drink and a coffee and was said to have consumed them at the same time. Earlier this week Bynes also tweeted a picture of herself with the caption ?Looking pudgy and I broke my nail.? I really don?t know who that girl sees in the mirror if she thinks she?s ?pudgy? I don?t think people can get any thinner. Bynes has been running into some legal trouble as of late as well with two hit and run cases. To top it off, her behavior is becoming increasingly spastic and bizarre [...]

Real Estate Q&A: Revocable Trusts and Wrap-Around Mortgages ...

Q-A-300x199.jpgEach month, San Diego State University?lecturer and Zillow Blog contributor Leonard Baron answers two questions from readers regarding buying, selling and investing. Have a question? Send it to?Leonard@ProfessorBaron.com

Revocable trusts

Hi Professor ??I keep hearing about trusts and that forming one can be a good idea to save money on taxes and maybe provide liability protection to my assets. What are the basics? Bob. N., Toledo, OH

Hi Bob ??It depends. Here are the basics on the most common trust, a revocable living trust (RLT). State laws differ, but an RLT is set up to allow the trustor (forming the trust) to skip probate court at death. The trustor would title all their real estate, bank accounts, etc., into the RLT, and when they pass away the assets are distributed via what the trustor detailed in the trust. This can also occur via a will, but a will is ?probated? in state court, which takes a big chunk of fees for administering the estate. If you have an RLT, which costs about $2,500, the assets in the trust skip being probated, and your estate skips those probate fees ??but talk to an estate attorney in your state for more information.

An RLT does not give any liability protection or save money on taxes during the life of the trustor. Other trusts ??expensive ones starting at $20,000 and up ??could save you money on taxes, hide or protect your assets, etc. But your estate would probably have to be several million dollars to consider these types of arrangements.

Wrap-around mortgages

Hi Leonard ??My daughter is considering buying a property with a wrap-around mortgage because she can?t get a regular bank loan. I?m concerned because isn?t the seller violating their mortgage by selling the property and not paying off the mortgage? Any suggestions? Aaron S., Salt Lake City, UT

Hi Aaron ??You should be concerned. Yes, the seller could be violating their mortgage terms. There also could be insurance issues, higher transaction/legal costs and all kinds of other issues with a wrap-around loan.

Many times rent-to-own or wrap-around deals are purchased by people who don?t have the financial wherewithal to do a traditional mortgage from a bank. They mistakenly think that buying ?any? property is better than not buying at all ??which it?s not!?Renting is not throwing away money; buying a bad real estate deal probably is throwing away money.

You should coach your daughter?to get into financial shape to qualify for a traditional mortgage, shop all the available inventory in the area and buy when she finds a great property and is ready to become a homeowner.

Artificial spleen to treat bloodstream infections: Sepsis therapeutic device under development

Mar. 30, 2013 ? The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University announced today that it was awarded a $9.25 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to further advance a blood-cleansing technology developed at the Institute with prior DARPA support, and help accelerate its translation to humans as a new type of sepsis therapy.

The device will be used to treat bloodstream infections that are the leading cause of death in critically ill patients and soldiers injured in combat.

To rapidly cleanse the blood of pathogens, the patient's blood is mixed with magnetic nanobeads coated with a genetically engineered version of a human blood 'opsonin' protein that binds to a wide variety of bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and toxins. It is then flowed through microchannels in the device where magnetic forces pull out the bead-bound pathogens without removing human blood cells, proteins, fluids, or electrolytes -- much like a human spleen does. The cleansed blood then flows back to the patient.

"In just a few years we have been able to develop a suite of new technologies, and to integrate them to create a powerful new device that could potentially transform the way we treat sepsis," said Wyss founding director and project leader, Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D. "The continued support from DARPA enables us to advance our device manufacturing capabilities and to obtain validation in large animal models, which is precisely what is required to enable this technology to be moved towards testing in humans."

The team will work to develop manufacturing and integration strategies for its core pathogen-binding opsonin and Spleen-on-a-Chip fluidic separation technologies, as well as a novel coating technology called "SLIPS," which is a super-hydrophobic coating inspired from the slippery surface of a pitcher plant that repels nearly any material it contacts. By coating the inner surface of the channels of the device with SLIPS, blood cleansing can be carried out without the need for anticoagulants to prevent blood clotting.

In addition to Ingber, the multidisciplinary team behind this effort includes Wyss core faculty and Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science faculty member Joanna Aizenberg, Ph.D., who developed the SLIPS technology; Wyss senior staff member Michael Super, Ph.D., who engineered the human opsonin protein; and Mark Puder, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School who will be assisting with animal studies.

10 Anti-Aging Secrets - Health Guide to Beauty and Skincare ...

Secrets to anti agingIt is a dream for sore eyes if the aging process can be delayed. Is it possible to dawdle the aging process? The key to this lies in the foods we devour. There are various foods for consumption that can supplement the diet with nutrients that are loaded with anti aging properties.

Recognizing the foodstuffs that should be eaten is a way of combating the ageing process. Eating a diet splashed with sufficient anti-ageing nutrients can help in holding up the negative effects of the aging process.

Let us list a few secrets have a supple, wrinkle-free and glowing complexion even as you advance into the years.

Healthy eating

Our skin is a reflection of our diet. Whatever we eat shows up on our faces. Diet has a very important role to play in the anti-aging process. The food taken in by the mouth provides the body with all the various nutrients needed to stay fit and healthy.

The largest organ in our human body, the skin shows off whatever we have put inside the body. Each meal makes a difference so eat right every time. The body relies on nutrients all the time. To keep this up one needs to eat two portions of a fruity diet daily. Fruits are enriched with antioxidants, large amounts of water content and fiber. These three ingredients of the fruits are a blessing for the human body.

Seeds and nuts contain essential fatty acids and are recognized as grand anti-ageing foods. The human beings are incapable of producing EFA?s (essential fatty acids) in the body and have to depend on the nuts for them. EFA?s assist the human body in producing cell membranes that is essential for shielding the cell from harmful substances.

Damaged cell membranes lead to poor cell growth, reduced cell renewal and a speedy ageing as the cells can be attacked by harmful free radicals. EFA?s are also found in abundant quantities in oily fishes like the salmon, cod, and the mackerel. Avocados also are full of EFA?s.

A high protein diet of good quality like eggs, meat and fishes can help ward off ageing temporarily. Proteins are the building blocks and help the body to manufacture new cells and repair itself. Lack of protein leads to weathering of the body as the repair mechanism is not proper.

Lists of anti-aging foods

Anti-aging foods consist of Seeds of pumpkins, sesame etc, Raw walnuts, cashew nuts, almonds, Green tea, Avocado, Green vegetables, melons, and fish. Berries are a rich of antioxidants and remember Water is the elixir of life.

Last and not the least don?t forget to exercise. Exercise promotes longevity, slows down ageing, and helps you stay fit.

Effect of exercise on DNA and aging

Exercise positively affects the DNA as it retards the aging. People who exercised energetically for at least 3 hours every week had more elongated telomeres showing an age 9 years younger than people who led a stagnant and sedentary life style.

Telomeres are the guarding ends of the chromosomes that condense with age. As the length of the telomeres shorten it leads to various age related ailments. The stress on the body tissues increase as the telomeres need to perform properly.

The body is then affected by illnesses like cancer, blood pressure, mental problems and a lot more. Damage to the body due to free radicals is reduces greatly by exercising the body. This way the body can maintain health instead of focusing on the repairing process.

Free Radicals/Antioxidants

A lot of damage and distortion takes place on a cellular level due to the free radicals. The protein that maintains the body?s elasticity is called collagen. The free radicals cause the supple collagen to become firm and hard.

This shows in the form hard skin. Free radicals are found in a diet high in fats, refined carbohydrates, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and additives. These destructing radicals have to bring under control and this is possible only by antioxidants.

Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals. Vegetables and fruits are a treasure of antioxidants specially if consumed in the raw form. Berries and pomegranate have a lot of antioxidants.

Smoking and drinking, a large amount of alcohol, leads to the buildup of free radicals. Overexposure of the human body to direct sunlight leads to the production of free radicals.

Vitamin Supplements

The diet should be rich in Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which can work miracles in the fight against the aging process.

There are various nutritional supplements that fulfill all the antioxidant requirements in one glass. These are available in juice powder form that provides the body with nutrients that are necessary for the body to function to full capacity.

They take care of the overall cellular health providing the optimum dosage of essential dosages of beta carotene and pro-vitamin A. Vitamin C, Vitamin E and essential fatty acids are imperative for the development and mending of collagen so it is necessary to take its dose daily. A Vitamin C pill can restore the glow to the skin within days.

Water is the elixir of life

Drink plenty water to restock lost liquids in the body .This leads to hydration of Skin.? Drinking water eliminates toxins from the human body .The toxins have a negative consequence on general health and long life.

Hormones

Hormone imbalance can bring about destruction to the skin. Hormone imbalance can cause severe skin conditions like acne, dry skin, dull, grey looking skin, eczema, pigmentation and oily skin. The hormone levels of estrogen, testosterone, HGH and CoQ10 need to be assessed by a doctor.

Detoxification of skin

The stomach gets a rest and this detox diet reduces stress on the body getting rid of the toxins at the same time. The energy levels are maintained as normal.

Stress: anti agingStress should be reduced

Stress leads to aging are a well documented fact. It dwindles blood flow and food to the Skin leading to a sickly look, hair loss, and brittle nails. Stress leads to free radicals that can injure the human body on a cellular stage. Stress puts off our bodies and it can?t operate optimally. Stress robs the body of the essential nutrients.

Allergies, Food Sensitivities and Intolerances

Food allergies can mess with eating habits and Thwart one from attaining a nutritionally best diet. Wheat and gluten intolerance can give a feeling of bloatedness and lead to irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. Diary sensitivities can be the ground for eczema and asthma.

Nonprofit unemployment plan doesn't change eligibility ? Business ...

Some nonprofit Minnesota em??ployers can opt into an alternative unemployment compensation plan that allows skipping quarterly unemployment taxes in exchange for reimbursing the state for any benefits paid.

Good news for those employers: The alternative plan doesn?t affect unemployment eligibility. Employees still have to show they quit for reasons attributable to their employers.

Recent case: Renee quit her job with a religious nonprofit and moved to North Dakota. She applied for unemployment benefits, arguing that even though her decision was purely voluntary, she should get the benefits because her former em??ployer opted into the alternative program.

The court tossed out her case, concluding that the same eligibility rules apply no matter which system a nonprofit opts to use. (Carlson v. The Episcopal Diocese, No. A12-0473, Court of Appeals of Minnesota, 2012)

Argentina offers to pay debts with cash, bonds

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Argentina proposed a creative way out of its debt showdown Friday night, describing a mix of cash and bonds that it suggested would amount to a huge profit, but not a gargantuan one, for the investors it calls "vulture funds."

The government's lawyers gave an appellate panel in New York a proposed payment plan that could take many more years to cancel $1.44 billion in defaulted bonds, interest and penalties left unpaid since the country's world-record 2001 default.

"Argentina's proposal accounts for past-due amounts to bring the debt current, provides for a fair return going forward, and also gives an upside in the form of annual payments if Argentina's economy grows," the Cleary, Gottlieb lawyers said.

The money directly at stake in this case is just a fraction of Argentina's remaining defaulted debt, which adds up to more than $11 billion in capital and interest. This plan would also enable those creditors to get paid as well, over time, providing a truly equitable solution, the lawyers argued.

And to be fair to all, they said the new bonds would also be made available to the vast majority of investors who accepted pennies on the dollar in 2005 and 2010 for their defaulted debt.

Argentina is arguing that to do otherwise would violate the principle the court aims to uphold ? the "pari passu" clause in the original bond contracts, which means the sovereign debt issuer must treat all bondholders equally.

"This proposal would provide plaintiffs with significant compensation, and ? unlike the '100 cents on the dollar immediately' formula adopted by the court below ? is consistent with the pari passu clause, longstanding principles of equity, and the Republic's capacity to pay," Argentina argued.

Just who owns these bonds and what price they were originally bought for is impossible to say. Even defaulted bonds are constantly traded, and the plaintiffs include huge hedge fund investors like billionaire Paul Singer as well as Argentine retirees who saw their much more humble life savings melt away in Argentina's economic crisis.

Under this deal, Argentina said the mom-and-pop investors would get immediate cash for the interest that has built up since 2003, plus Par bonds and GDP bonds that would eventually make them whole.

Institutional investors would be offered a different mix, mostly Discount bonds, which Argentina said would reward them handsomely.

It cited as an example nearly $50 million in defaulted debt that the lead plaintiffs, NML Capital Ltd., reportedly purchased in 2008. Accepting the mix of new bonds in exchange for these bad debts would eventually provide an aggregate profit of 284 percent, but not an unfair gain of 1,380 percent, the lawyers argued.

President Cristina Fernandez personally reviewed the proposal just before it was filed, the state news agency Telam reported.

'The Shot' is still hot topic 26 years later

WASHINGTON (AP) ? No list of great NCAA championship game moments is complete unless Keith Smart's jumper for Indiana in 1987 is on it.

Known by Hoosiers fans to this day as "The Shot," and known in much less complimentary terms by Syracuse faithful, that 16-foot jumper from the left side with 5 seconds to play is a film clip staple throughout March.

The memory of "The Shot," which gave Indiana a 74-73 victory, is still with Smart, now the coach of the Sacramento Kings, while Jim Boeheim, still the coach at Syracuse, revisited it every day for 16 years.

"It's pretty much every day," Smart said Wednesday when asked how often he thinks about the jumper that made him a hero in Bloomington and a villain in Syracuse. "Probably every other day something happens. I'll go somewhere to eat, or when we travel, I check into the hotel and somebody sees the name tag on the bag and they'll mention something about 'The Shot' then. Very seldom does a week go by without something that happens."

Boeheim knew exactly how long it took for him to stop thinking about Smart's play on a regular basis.

"We played very well in the game. When you lose a game like that, you really almost never get over it. I got over it in 2003," Boeheim said, referring to the Orange's first national championship, played in the same building ? the New Orleans Super Dome. "I probably thought about it for those 16 years most of the time.

"I never think about it anymore. Coach (Bob) Knight was good after the game. He told me we would get back and win it, he just didn't tell me it would take 16 years. He's smart, just not that smart."

"The Shot" has been summoned from the archives even more than usual this week because Indiana and Syracuse will meet in the East Regional semifinal Thursday night, their fourth meeting since the national championship game, but the first in the NCAA tournament.

"Probably this year more than anything, you had more people talk about its significance," Smart said. "Even when I saw the brackets, I said, 'The possibility of them coming together is pretty high.' And lo and behold it came into play. You hear a little bit more conversation because of that now, because it happened against Syracuse."

A great championship game came down to the final minute. With 38 seconds left, Syracuse's Howard Triche ? the uncle of current Orange guard Brandan Triche ? made the first of two free throws for a 73-70 lead. Six seconds later Smart scored to cut the lead to one. Four seconds later, Syracuse freshman Derrick Coleman, who finished with 19 rebounds, missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Boeheim had taken his players off the lane, conceding the rebound. Smart got the rebound. The play was supposed to go to Steve Alford, the current coach at New Mexico, who had already made six 3-pointers in the first NCAA tournament played with a 3-point line.

"It was designated for Steve, of course, but we moved the ball around," Indiana's Daryl Thomas said that Monday night. "It came to me and I kicked it out to Keith and he hit the basket."

Smart, one of the first junior college transfers to play for Knight, summed up the play at the postgame news conference.

"Tonight was my turn. ... I thank Daryl for not taking the last shot and passing out to me. ... It was a wise decision on his part."

Twenty-six years later Smart is still talking about "The Shot" because people keep asking him about it.

"I understand it. Every person, boy, girl, man or child, they want to talk about the moment or what they were doing when it happened," he said. "I don't know this person and this person comes up with all this excitement, what am I supposed to do? 'Nah, nah, I don't want to talk to you?' Nah. That's your moment and if you want to talk about, let's talk. It's going to be brief anyway. I won't rain on their parade or anything like that."

Smart is quick to recall the first time he spoke with Boeheim about it.

"When we were getting ready for the draft, kind of doing some background on different players, I called Jim Boeheim because I was looking at Dion Waiters. I called to get some information on Dion," Smart said, referring to the Syracuse guard who went on to be the No. 4 overall pick by Cleveland last June. "I called him. I said, 'Coach, this is a name from the past.' He answers the phone and says, 'A name from the past?' I said, 'This is Keith Smart. Coach Smart.' He said, 'Keith Smart, Keith Smart, Keith Smart. Let me tell you: it took me a long time to get over that.' I said, 'Coach, I would not have called you if you hadn't won one. I'd have had somebody else give you a call.' We had a good conversation after that."

Brandan Triche said he and his uncle haven't spent much time talking about the game.

"I have seen him play, but I haven't seen the actual whole game," said Triche, who said he gets called Howard on occasion. "I think watching, it was like a missed assignment. I haven't directly talked to him about it."

As with all plays that decide a championship there are the two sides and their reaction.

"It's always difficult when you lose in the championship game, the last game of the year and the last shot," Boeheim said. "That's always a difficult thing."

Smart said his current players and family are proving his college coach correct.

"They replay it all the time, every year," Smart said of his players. "They all went to college and when Indiana gets beat somewhere, they're always like, 'Oh, Indiana lost or this or that.' But I'll always have the last laugh. I played at Indiana and I won.

"That's what Coach Knight said to us after the game, 'You guys have no idea what you've done. Sure, you've won a championship. But it won't really sink in until it's 25 or 30 years from now, when your kids see it. That came to fruition about 15 years ago, my son was probably around 10. We were waiting for the tournament to come on, and they showed 'The Shot.' My son goes, 'Dad, look at you!' I was like, 'Wow, cool.' Just like Coach said after the game that night. It came true."

Americans back preparation for extreme weather and sea-level rise

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Images told the story: lower Manhattan in darkness, coastal communities washed away, cars floating in muck. Superstorm Sandy, a harbinger of future extreme weather intensified by climate change, caught the country off guard in October.

Unprepared for the flooding and high winds that ensued, the East Coast suffered more than $70 billion in property damage and more than 100 deaths.

Will Americans prepare and invest now to minimize the impact of disasters such as Sandy, or deal with storms and rising sea levels after they occur?

A new survey commissioned by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Center for Ocean Solutions finds that an overwhelming majority of Americans want to prepare in order to minimize the damage likely to be caused by global warming-induced sea-level rise and storms.

A majority also wants people whose properties and businesses are located in hazard areas to foot the bill for this preparation, not the government. Eighty-two percent of the Americans surveyed said that people and organizations should prepare for the damage likely to be caused by sea-level rise and storms, rather than simply deal with the damage after it happens.

Among the most popular policy solutions identified in the survey are stronger building codes for new structures along the coast to minimize damage (favored by 62 percent) and preventing new buildings from being built near the coast (supported by 51 percent).

"People support preventive action," said survey director Jon Krosnick, a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and professor of communication, "and few people believe these preparations will harm the economy or eliminate jobs. In fact, more people believe that preparation efforts will help the economy and create jobs around the U.S., in their state and in their town than think these efforts will harm the economy and result in fewer jobs in those areas. But people want coastal homeowners and businesses that locate in high-risk areas to pay for these measures."

The challenges posed by rising sea levels and increasingly severe storms will only intensify as more Americans build along the coasts. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report released March 25 predicts that already crowded U.S. coastlines will become home to an additional 11 million people by 2020.

Survey questions were formulated to assess participants' beliefs about climate change and gather opinions about the impact of climate change, sea-level rise and storms on communities, the economy and jobs.

The survey also gauged public support for specific coastal adaptation strategies and how to pay for them. "People are least supportive of policies that try to hold back Mother Nature," Krosnick said. "They think it makes more sense to recognize risk and reduce exposure."

Among the survey's respondents, 48 percent favor sand dune restoration and 33 percent favor efforts to maintain beaches with sand replenishment, while 37 percent support relocating structures away from the coast and 33 percent support constructing sea walls.

Eighty-two percent of the survey's respondents believe that Earth's temperature has been rising over the last 100 years. However, even a majority of those who doubt the existence of climate change favor adaptation measures (60 percent).

"The question is, how does public support for preparation translate to action?" asked Meg Caldwell, executive director of the Center for Ocean Solutions. "Our impulse is to try to move quickly to put communities back together the way they were after devastation. But that impulse often leads to doubling down on high-risk investments, such as rebuilding in areas likely to experience severe impacts. To move toward long-term resiliency for coastal communities, we need to seize opportunities to apply new thinking, new standards and long-term solutions."

Krosnick presented the survey results this morning at a policy briefing hosted by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

The survey was conducted via the Internet with a nationally representative probability sample of 1,174 American adults, 18 and older, conducted by GfK Custom Research March 3-18, 2013. The survey was administrated in both English and Spanish. The survey has a margin of error of +/-4.9 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.

Make Better Eye Contact and Remember People's Names with One Simple Trick

Make Better Eye Contact and Remember People's Names with One Simple TrickIf you find yourself stumbling over conversations with other people, reader whyalways shares a tip for making better eye contact and remembering people's names all at once.

Remembering names and making eye contact are important. I had trouble with both. After reading this series at the Art of Manliness, I realized I needed to get better at them. What I've started to do is: as soon as I meet someone new I pair their name with their eye color. How do I find out their eye color? By making good eye contact. To learn someone's eye color you have to look them in the eye. Its a specific thing to do instead of something more general like "make good eye contact."

How does this help me remember their name? Because their eye color/eyes act as a tethering image in my memory so that their name is attached to something very specific instead of just floating around to get lost/misplaced. Simple and immediate, but has helped me enough that I felt I should share it.

It may not be foolproof for everyone, but it's just one more thing to add to your bag of tricks for remembering people's names and making good eye contact.

Every week, we receive tons of reader tips, often in response to tips we've posted. Prebiotics: Do supplements in baby formula help prevent allergies?

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Prebiotic supplements in infant formula may help to prevent eczema, according to a systematic review published in The Cochrane Library. However, the review highlights a lack of high quality evidence for the effects of prebiotics in preventing allergies.

It is thought that bacteria lining the gut may play an important role in a child developing sensitivities to certain foods and allergens, regulating immune responses and determining how they will react to the same substances in later life. Prebiotics are indigestible components of breast milk, fruit and vegetables that stimulate the growth and activity of healthy bacteria in the gut. They are distinct from probiotics, which are cultures of live bacteria such as those added to yoghurts and infant formula. Prebiotics can also be added to infant formula. However, it is unclear exactly what effect these supplements have on the development of allergies.

The researchers drew together data from four studies involving a total of 1,428 children. Children were given formula containing prebiotic supplements or, as a control, standard formula. Studies followed children to between four months and two years of age and reported the number who developed allergies. Eczema was significantly reduced in children who were fed formula containing prebiotics. Only two studies investigated asthma. The number of children who developed asthma was similar whether they were given formula with added prebiotics or without. In one study looking at urticaria (hives), giving children formula containing prebiotics did not prevent any cases of the allergy.

Only one study assessed the effect of giving formula containing prebiotics to high-risk children, who had close family members with allergies. In this study, prebiotics reduced both eczema and asthma, but there were no significant reductions in allergies overall in high-risk children. "Given these findings, it remains unclear whether the use of prebiotics should be restricted to infants at high risk of allergy or may have an effect in low risk populations," said lead researcher, John Sinn of the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia.

"Overall, we found some evidence that infant formula containing prebiotic supplements can help prevent eczema in children up to two years of age," said Sinn. "However, the quality of existing evidence is generally low or very low. More high quality research is needed before we can recommend routine use of prebiotics for prevention of allergy."

'Amazing Spider-Man 2': B.J. Novak revealed as newest castmember

By Greg Gilman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "The Office" star B.J. Novak will appear in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," director Marc Webb revealed Thursday on Twitter.

"Day 38. A supposed rumor about a Dunder-Mifflin takeover of Oscorp?" Webb tweeted with a link to a picture of a dapper-looking Novak.

Webb has been busy tweeting various cryptic images from the production's set since filming began in February. TheWrap has reached out to Sony Pictures for more details on which character Novak will be playing in the film.

Novak, who plays Ryan Howard on NBC's "Office," joins a number of recognizable names already confirmed to star in the sequel to 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man." Chris Cooper has been cast as Norman Osborn, the businessman alter-ego of villain Green Goblin, while Paul Giamatti will portray the Rhino, Jamie Foxx is Electro and Dane DeHaan ("Chronicle") stars as Harry Osborn - a character who eventually opposes Spider-Man as the Green Goblin, too.

Andrew Garfield, who returns as the titular superhero, will have his hands full more than one woman. Emma Stone returns as Gwen Stacey, while Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") will complicate his love life as Mary Jane Watson. "Like Crazy" star Felicity Jones has also been cast as an unknown character.

"Amazing Spider-Man 2" is due out in theaters May 2, 2014.

NEW YORK (AP) ? No "downward-facing dog" is required.

Lululemon said Wednesday that no demonstrations of yoga or any other positions are needed to return the pricey black yoga pants that the company pulled from shelves last week after finding that they were too sheer.

"We do not require guests to demonstrate the sheerness of their bottoms," said Sari Martin, who works for communications firm ICR and spoke on behalf of Lululemon.

The Vancouver-based yoga gear maker's statement comes a day after a New York Post report that was widely circulated by the media recounted one woman's tale of being asked by sales staff to bend over to prove that the yoga pants she was trying to return were sheer.

Martin would not comment on the specific instance recounted by the Post, but said Wednesday that this is not standard policy for Lululemon staffers. To the contrary, she said that people who bought the black "Luon" yoga pants, which cost $72 to $98, since March 1, either online or in store, can return them for a full refund, "no questions asked."

The hubbub comes a week after Lululemon said it was recalling its black "Luon" yoga pants, which account for about 17 percent of all women's pants in its stores, because their material was too sheer. The pants are made from a combination of nylon and Lycra fibers.

The company still hasn't determined the cause of the problem. And officials have declined to say when the items would be back in its stores. But the company has added more stringent controls and is diversifying its suppliers to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The flap is a blemish for a company that has been a superstar in the athletic world. Lululemon has grown to 211 stores, including 135 stores in the U.S. and 51 in Canada, as its yoga and other workout clothing has gained popularity with men and women. Its devoted fans helped Lululemon, founded in 1998, become a $1.4 billion business.

But the pants snafu isn't the only quality issue the chain has had, though. The company also has had sheerness problems with swimsuits and light-colored pants.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Howard Tubin said that while the sheer pants are an "odd" situation, it's just a growing pain for the rapidly expanding company.

"They tried to get in front of this by not letting the merchandise stay on store shelves and they're working with vendors to try to figure out how this happened," he said. "They're probably handling it the best way they can."

Shares fell 76 cents to $62.27.

There used to be a time when Grazia the choice for the grown up woman. A woman who didn?t care about cheap celebrity gossip or ins and outs of z-listers daily lives. Grazia got this. It didn?t ram it?s pages full of vacuous crap instead it used to look at the real issues going on out there in the wider world. Ya know?REAL issues like rape and war not just what Victoria Beckham had for breakfast.

That however seems to have been put on the back burner whilst they step in line with other trash rags such as closer, heat and reveal.

This week saw the online version of the magazine publish a homage to 1994 ? why not, after all the 90?s was a good time.

We can totally get down with how everyone loved Rachel from Friends haircut and how Cool Britannia was born but number 4 on their check list left us feeling cold?

Number 4 on Grazia?s list of ?10 things we have 1994 to thank for?

The Kardashians become the Kardashians.

OJ Simpson was charged with the murder of Nicole Brown and her lover and therefore the Kardashian family were propelled in to stardom.
And to quote?

Despite ?watertight? evidence, he got off thanks to his lawyer, Robert George Kardashian, who became a celebrity overnight and, well?
NOW: Hello, The Kardashians!

We have no words other than to say thank goodness that Nicole Brown was murdered because unless that had happened we wouldn?t know who Kim Kardashian and co were?how awful THAT would have been for society.

A family which was made famous because the head of the household at the time managed to get OJ Simpson off a murder case is now cause for celebration.

Doesn?t that just make you fill with joy at the way that the media values celebrity?

As if we need anymore media outlets throwing themselves down in the mercy of celebrity worship. But to class the OJ Simpson murder trial as a blessing because it brought us the Kardashians? Crass.?

US quake linked to oil wastewater

Scientists have linked the underground injection of oil-drilling wastewater to a magnitude-5.7 earthquake in 2011 that struck the US state of Oklahoma.

Wastewater injection from drilling operations has been linked to seismic events in the past, but these have typically been much smaller quakes.

They also have tended to occur in the first weeks or months of injection.

The study in Geology suggests that "induced seismicity" can occur years after wastewater injection begins.

Wastewater was first injected into Oklahoma's Wilzetta oilfields, near the town of Prague, some 18 years prior to the November 2011 series of quakes that included three of magnitude 5 or greater.

The new study adds to an increasing body of evidence that the injection of wastewater is correlated to an increase in seismic events.

A comprehensive review in 2012 by the US' National Academy of Sciences found that "injection for disposal of waste water derived from energy technologies into the subsurface does pose some risk for induced seismicity".

However, the report said the number of such documented events over several decades was small compared to the overall number of operations carried out.

In April 2012, a study by scientists at the US Geological Survey of the interior of the US found that events of magnitude 3 or greater had "abruptly increased in 2009" from 1.2 per year in the previous 50 years to more than 25 per year - although a number of gas and oil extraction methods may be implicated in the rise.

'Unexpectedly large'

But the authors of the new study focus on the significantly larger and delayed events in Prague, which they wrote "necessitate reconsideration of the maximum possible size of injection-induced earthquakes, and of the time scale considered diagnostic of induced seismicity".

Study co-author Geoffrey Abers of Columbia University said that "there's something important about getting unexpectedly large earthquakes out of small systems that we have discovered here, " adding that "the risk of humans inducing large earthquakes from even small injection activities is probably higher" than had been believed.

But seismologist Austin Holland of the Oklahoma Geological Survey said while the study showed a potential link between the earthquake and wastewater injection, "it is still the opinion of those at the Oklahoma Geological Survey that these earthquakes could be naturally occurring".

"There remain many open questions, and more scientific investigations are underway on this sequence of earthquakes and many others within the state of Oklahoma," he said.

The topic is particularly relevant to the hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" debate.

In fracking, water, sand and chemicals are injected into petroleum wells in a bid to extract trapped natural gas.

Opponents of the practice say that it risks causing seismic events and contaminating groundwater.

The National Academies report concluded that "the process of hydraulic fracturing a well as presently implemented for shale gas recovery does not pose a high risk for inducing felt seismic events".

But fracking creates wastewater that is often injected underground just as in conventional drilling, a practice that has been implicated in seismic events as well, but that is currently prohibited by EU legislation.

The topic remains hotly debated in the scientific literature, and between lobbyists and policy-makers, particularly in the UK.

Links between fracking in Blackpool and tremors in the region led to a government ban on the practice, which was lifted at the end of December 2012.

Correction 27 March 2013: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the wastewater injected was from hydraulic fracturing - in fact, the wastewater implicated was from conventional oil drilling.

New Gene Markers Reveal Cancer Risk

A huge international effort involving more than 100 institutions and genetic tests on 200,000 people has uncovered dozens of signposts in DNA that can help reveal further a person's risk for breast, ovarian or prostate cancer, scientists reported Wednesday.

It's the latest mega-collaboration to learn more about the intricate mechanisms that lead to cancer. And while the headway seems significant in many ways, the potential payoff for ordinary people is mostly this: Someday there may be genetic tests that help identify women with the most to gain from mammograms, and men who could benefit most from PSA tests and prostate biopsies.

And perhaps farther in the future these genetic clues might lead to new treatments.

"This adds another piece to the puzzle," said Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research U.K., the charity which funded much of the research.

One analysis suggests that among men whose family history gives them roughly a 20 percent lifetime risk for prostate cancer, such genetic markers could identify those whose real risk is 60 percent.

The markers also could make a difference for women with BRCA gene mutations, which puts them at high risk for breast cancer. Researchers may be able to separate those whose lifetime risk exceeds 80 percent from women whose risk is about 20 to 50 percent. One doctor said that might mean some women would choose to monitor for cancer rather than taking the drastic step of having healthy breasts removed.

AP

Vicki Gilbert sits on stone steps in Wiltshire, England in this undated photo made available by the family on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. In 2010, Gilbert was diagnosed with breast cancer and then found she carries the mutated BRCA1 gene which may make her pre-disposed to ovarian cancer. Gilbert decided to have ovaries removed to prevent the potential onset of further cancer, and her breast cancer is in remission. A huge international effort involving more than 100 institutions and genetic tests on 200,000 people has uncovered dozens of signposts in DNA that can help reveal further a person?s risk for breast, ovarian or prostate cancer, scientists reported Wednesday, March 27, 2013. It?s the latest mega-collaboration to learn more about the intricate mechanisms that lead to cancer. (AP Photo) Close

Scientists have found risk markers for the three diseases before, but the new trove doubles the known list, said one author, Douglas Easton of Cambridge University. The discoveries also reveal clues about the biological underpinnings of these cancers, which may pay off someday in better therapies, he said.

Experts not connected with the work said it was encouraging but that more research is needed to see how useful it would be for guiding patient care. One suggested that using a gene test along with PSA testing and other factors might help determine which men have enough risk of a life-threatening prostate cancer that they should get a biopsy. Many prostate cancers found early are slow-growing and won't be fatal, but there is no way to differentiate and many men have surgery they may not need.

Easton said the prospects for a genetic test are greater for prostate and breast cancer than ovarian cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women worldwide, with more than 1 million new cases a year. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men after lung cancer, with about 900,000 new cases every year. Ovarian cancer accounts for about 4 percent of all cancers diagnosed in women, causing about 225,000 cases worldwide.

The new results were released in 13 reports in Nature Genetics, PLOS Genetics and other journals. They come from a collaboration involving more than 130 institutions in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. The research was mainly paid for by Cancer Research U.K., the European Union and the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Scientists used scans of DNA from more than 200,000 people to seek the markers, tiny variations in the 3 billion "letters" of the DNA code that are associated with disease risk.
