Central Texas cancer victim's fight gets tougher

LAKEWAY, Texas -- On the eve of her fundraiser a young cancer victim continues her fight. Neither she nor her family are about to give up. To help the cause you could say one company is willing to give the shirt off its back.

KVUE introduced you to nine-year-old Torrence Spence back in June at the Papa Murphy's Pizza in Lakeway. On Friday, Torrence and her friends dove into a different kids' delicacy -- donuts. But the tasty treats couldn't sugar coat the news that her brain tumor is growing.

"She had her scans at the end of July," said Holly Nowak, a family friend. "We expected a little bit of bad news. What we got was a lot more bad news." ?

So to help build up her morale, Torrence, her family and friends got to tour Villa Prints -- a T-shirt printing company. The featured items Friday are the T-shirts being printed for Torrence's fundraiser Saturday night. The shirts read "Inspired by Torrence."

"She's a great little girl if you've met her before," said Eric Morris, the Villa Prints manager. "She's just a bright shining star, which is why we have the design that we have on the shirt. It really reflects her personality." ?

"The visual was such an important reminder of the support from the community," said Nowak. "We wanted her to be able to go to HEB and see her shirt on a stranger to know that this stranger cared -- was helping and was cheering her on."

What did Torrence think?

"Pretty cool," she said. "Seeing all my friends wearing my T-shirts."

So cool in fact, it made Morris king for a day. Torrence hugged him as she was leaving and told him, "Thank you."

Torrence has been fighting her brain tumor since she was a baby and the medical bills have mounted for her family. Villa Prints made a $1,000 donation. The T-shirts Torrence inspired will be on sale at Saturday night's fundraiser at Carlos' N Charlie's. There'll be dinner, music and a silent auction with more than 70 items with a total value of more than $10,000. There will also be activities for the kids.
