Internet hosting service is a kind of service that enables individuals and alignment to supply informative content through the internet site made available and accessible in the internet. Web servers have to do with a hardware or a software, computer and computer application relatively, which helps to transport content which can be accessible in the web.
Big companies which are not internet service companies additionally demand or require a permanently connected web server for file storage or memory, sending and getting emails, to integrate with other web sites. The major server may be utilized by the firm to present the necessary details in explanation of their items and services offered and open for on line transactions.
There are different types of hosting services discussed in this article. There are certainly those free web servers hosting where there?s very little or less control. This is offered by some businesses with less type creations and much less advertising controlled, which is why people or firms host on their own servers. Ones? site is placed in yet another web site and it?s shared so it is known as the shared web servers hosting. The Characteristics may be very extensive and the shared web service can be with a reseller. Another type of website hosting server is the reseller web servers hosting. It permits individuals to be the hosting servers themselves. They offer an identical service to their partner service plan holder and provide technical guidelines themselves. The Virtual Dedicated Web Servers Hosting or furthermore called the Vps divides servers into some other virtual servers. It means the virtual equipment themselves. It highlights that however the virtual machine is directly connected on the main server just like other server?s virtual devices, is proportionally equal in capabilities to a separate or yet another physical computer, is in fact meeting the individual?s needs, protects the privacy of another physical computer or server, and could be configured to perform the software server. The monitored web servers hosting or what is additionally called the dedicated hosting serving is an web hosting kind in which the personal leases the entire server without having to share it with any other. It is more elastic simply because the organizations take complete control over all the other servers which also contains the hardware and performing system. Similar the previous one is collocation web servers hosting. It is an information center kind where the space of the instruments is available for rental of common customers. While it has been well-known to most clients, the majority pertains to web commerce organizations or firms that make use of facilities in safety, cost-effective and permanent online connections. The newest hosting kind of platform permits consumer, scalable, powerful, and reliable hosting actions depending on utility binding. It refers to Cloud hosting. The name was derived from the use of clouds as abstract for the difficult system of infrastructure that?s involved. This type of storage capacity entrusts services with an user?s data, computation, private files, apps, and software over one network. It has overtaken services with a software.
John Adanas has been writing content articles on server hosting since 2003.
Move over, HD: 4K is the new hotness in townWhen one says high-definition display, you probably still think 720p or 1080p. But there's another contender that delivers even crisper, clearer, and more life-like images: 4K displays, which have four times the resolution of 1080p screens. This fairly new technology hasn't yet caught on, and 4K hardware and content are only barely starting to pop up. Take for example Sony's first 4K home theater projector ? announced last year and showcased at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), it's now available for purchase by anyone willing to plunk down $26,000 for it.
Tecca had some eyes-on time with the technology at CES, and in a side-by-side comparison with a 1080p display, we can say 4K comes out on top. On a small screen, however, 4K doesn't make a difference. The bigger the screen is, the more you'll appreciate this pixel-rich display technology, and the resolution shines even more when the images and videos are projected at large viewing size.
Sony's first 4k Home Movie Projector Right now, though, high-definition content that can take advantage of 4K displays are quite rare. Peter Jackson made a splash by filming The Hobbit in 5K resolution?? the film was criticized for being too life-like?? but it will take a while before you can get a copy of it for a home screening with family and friends.
YouTube has 4K viewing enabled, but every clip will take a while for you to load because files are obviously huge, similar to the size of TimeScapes: the first 4K movie you can download. TimeScapes, a timelapse cinematography of the American South West, is available in 1080p format on iTunes and 1440p format on?its website. But if you happen to have a 4K TV or if the $26,000 Sony projector is within your budget, you can also get it in 4K format for $299.95 sent to you as a 140GB file saved on a portable hard drive.

What a wondrous and challenging feast we celebrate at Pentecost. A feast like this challenges us, because it puts to the lie a lazy, sleepy, hidden, and tepid Christian life.
The Lord Jesus had said to Apostles, and still says to us: I have come to cast a fire on the earth! (Luke 12:49). This is a feast about fire, about a transformative, refining, and purifying fire that the Lord wants to kindle in us and in this world.
The Holy Spirit comes to quicken the Church, give her courage and get her to step out on her mission to bring Christ to the ends of the earth.
The Church is not a mere clubhouse, she is a light house, and the fire with which she is meant to shine is the Holy Spirit himself. In the readings today we find about 120 people all huddled, still in fear, in an upper room. Today, the Church breaks the huddle and executes the play, the locked doors fly open and she goes forth, unto all the nations.
The Readings today speak to us of the Holy Spirit in three ways: The Portraits of the Spirit, the Proclamation of the Spirit and the Propagation by the Spirit. Let?s look at all three.
I. The Power of the Spirit ? The Reading today speaks of the Holy Spirit using two images: rushing wind, and tongues of fire. Both these images speak of how the Lord empowers the individual and the Church with new life and passionate intensity. These two images also recall Psalm 50 which says, Our God comes, he does not keep silence, before him is a devouring fire, round about him a mighty tempest. (Psalm 50:3).
Rushing Wind ? Notice how the text from Acts opens: When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.
This text brings us to the very root meaning of the word ?Spirit.? For ?spirit? refers to ?breath,? and we have this preserved in our word ?respiration,? which means breathing. So, the Spirit of God is the breath of God, the Ruah Adonai (the Spirit, the breath of God).
Genesis 1:2 speaks of this saying the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And Genesis 2:7 speaks even more remarkably of something God did only for man, not the animals: then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Gen 2:7).
So the very Spirit of God was breathed into Adam! But, as we know, Adam lost this gift and died spiritually when he sinned.
Thus we see in this passage from Acts an amazing and wonderful resuscitation of the human person as these first Christians (120 in all) experience the rushing wind of God?s Spirit breathing spiritual life back into them. God does C.P.R. and brings humanity, dead in sin, back to life! The Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us once again as in a temple (cf 1 Cor 3:16). It has been said that Christmas is the feast of God with us, Good Friday is the Feast of God for us, but Pentecost is the Feast of God in us.
Tongues of Fire ? The text from Acts says, Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
The Bible often speaks of God as fire, or in fiery terms. Moses saw God as a burning bush. God led the people out of Egypt through the desert as a pillar of fire. Moses went up on to a fiery Mt. Sinai where God was. Psalm 97 says, The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick darkness are round about him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him, and burns up his adversaries round about. His lightnings lighten the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples behold his glory. (Ps 97:1-6). Scriptures call God a Holy fire, a consuming fire (cf Heb 12:29) and a refining fire (cf Is. 48:10; Jer 9:7; Zec 13:9; & Mal 3:3).
And so it is that our God, who is a Holy Fire, comes to dwell in us through his Holy Spirit. And as a Holy Fire, He refines us by burning away our sins and purifying us. As Job once said, But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold (Job 23:10).
And he is also preparing us for judgement, for if God is a Holy Fire, then who may endure the day of his coming or of our going to Him? What can endure the presence of Fire Himself? Only that which is already fire. Thus we must be set afire by God?s love.
So, in the coming of the Holy Spirit God sets us on fire to make us a kind of fire. In so doing, he purifies and prepares us to meet him one, He who is a Holy Fire.
This fire also causes us to burn with passionate intensity for God and for his kingdom. Our hearts are set afire with zeal for God and zeal for souls. With joy, holy love and burning zeal we are equipped to speak to others of God and manifest the intense love of God.
Fire changes everything it touches and we are sent forth as a holy fire into this world so that, by God grace the whole world will be changed by the spreading fire of God, the Holy Spirit.
Who or what have you set on fire lately? Let the Lord use you to cast fire on the earth.
II. The Proof of the Spirit. - You will notice that the Spirit Came on them like ?tongues? of Fire. And the reference to tongues is no mere accident. For notice how the Holy Spirit moves them to speak, and ultimately to witness. The text says: And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, ?Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.?
So behold how the Holy Spirit moves them to proclaim, not just in the safety of the upper room, but also in holy boldness before the crowds who have gathered.
Notice the transformation! Moments ago these were frightened people who gathered only behind locked doors, in secrecy. They were huddled together in fear. But now they go forth to the crowds and boldly proclaim Christ. They have gone from fear to faith, from cowardice to courage, from terror to testimony!
And how about us? Too many Christians are silent, dominated by fear. Perhaps they fear being called names, or not being popular. Perhaps they are anxious about being laughed at, or resisted, or of being asked questions they don?t feel capable of answering. Some Christians are able to gather in the ?upper room? of the parish and be active, even be leaders. But once outside the ?upper room? they slip into undercover mode. They become secret agent Christians.
Well, the Holy Spirit wants to change that, and to the degree that we have really met Jesus Christ and experienced his Holy Spirit we are less ?able? to keep silent. An old Gospel song says, I thought I wasn?t gonna testify, but I couldn?t keep it to myself, what the Lord has done for me. The Holy Spirit, if authentically received, wants to give us zeal and joy, and burn away our fear, so that testifying and witnessing are natural to us.
Note also how the Spirit ?translates? for the apostles, for the crowd before them spoke different languages, but all heard Peter and the others in their own language. The Spirit therefore assists not only us, but also those who hear us. My testimony is not dependent only on my eloquence, but also on the grace of the Holy Spirit who casts out deafness and opens hearts. Every Christian should remember this. Some of our most doubtful encounters with others can still bear great fruit on account of the work of the Holy Spirit who ?translates? for us and overcomes many obstacles that we might think insurmountable.
III. The Pattern of the Spirit ? In the great commission the Lord said, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age (Matt 28:19ff). He also said, as we have noted, I have come to cast a fire on the earth and How I wish the blaze were already ignited (Luke 12:49).
But how is the Lord going to do this?
Perhaps a picture will help. My parish church is dedicated to the Holy Spirit under the title: Holy Comforter. Above the high altar is the Latin inscription: Spiritus Domini, replevit orbem terrarum (The Spirit of the Lord, filled the orb of the earth). (See photo, above right, of our high altar).
And yet, we may wonder how He will do this.
But the walls of my parish Church answer the question. The clerestory walls are painted Spanish Red, and upon this great canvas are also painted the lives of 20 saints, surrounding us like a great cloud of witnesses (cf Heb 12:1). (See also, video below). And over the head of every saint is a tongue of fire.
THIS is how the Spirit of the Lord fills the earth. It is not ?magic fairy dust,? it is in the fiery transformation of every Christian, going forth into the world to bring light and warmth to a dark and cold world. THIS is how the Lord casts fire on earth, THIS is how the Spirit of the Lord fills the orb of the earth: in the lives of saints, and, if you are prepared to accept it, in YOU.
In the end, the Great Commission (Matt 28) is ?standing order No. 1.? No matter what else, we are supposed to do this. Parishes do not deserve to exist if they do not do this. We as individual Christians are a disgrace, and not worthy of the name, if we fail to win souls for Jesus Christ. The Spirit of the Lord is going to fill the orb of the earth, but only through us. The spread of the Gospel has been placed in your hands (scary isn?t it?).
Two years ago, my own parish, after a year of training, stepped out into our neighborhood, and went door to door and into the local park. And we announced Jesus Christ to over 1500 homes, and invited people to discover him in our parish, and in the sacraments. We have also taken our May procession to the Local Park. This year we have been doing one on one Evangelization and have made the commitment to the Lord to strive to bring one soul back to his house and the Sacraments. This fall we are heading into the park to do Eucharistic flash mobs (see video below).
Before we count even a single convert, this is already success because we are obeying Jesus Christ who said, simply, ?Go!? ?Go make disciples.? And, truth be told, we ARE seeing an increase in my parish. Our Sunday attendance has grown from about 450 to 520, a 15% increase. We are growing, and our attendance, while average for a downtown city parish, is going in the right direction. God never fails. God is faithful.
Spread the news: it works if you work it, so work it because God is worth it. Go make disciples. Ignore what the pollsters tell you about a declining Church and let the Lord cast a fire on the earth through you! Fires have way of spreading! Why not start one today? The Spirit of God will not disappoint.
I know this, my parish has a future because we are obeying Jesus Christ, we are making disciples. How about you and yours? If parishes do not obey, they do not deserve to exist and can expect to close one day, no matter how big they are today. I, in my short 50 years on this planet, have seen it: parishes once big, booming, and, (frankly), arrogant, are now declining and some are near closure. It happens to the best, if they do not evangelize, if they do not accomplish ?Job 1.? The Lord wants to light a fire. Why not become totally fire? Let the Spirit propagate the Church through you (I am not talking about the person next to you, I am talking to you).
Happy feast of Pentecost. But don?t forget that the basic image is very challenging, for it means getting out of the ?upper room,? opening the doors, and proclaiming Christ to the world. Let the Holy Spirit light a fire in you, and then, you can?t help but spread light and heat to a cold and dark world.
Let the evangelization of the whole world begin with you.
This video features details from the clerestory (upper window level) of my parish of Holy Comforter here in DC. Notice the tongue of fire above each saint. The paintings show how the Spirit of the Lord fills the orb of the earth, (see photo above), through the lives of the lives of the saints (this means you). It is not magic, it is grace, working in your life, through your gifts, and your relationships, that the Lord will reach each soul. The cloud of witnesses on the walls of my Church say simply, You are the way he will fill the earth and set it on fire. Let the blaze be ignited in you!
The song says: We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, looking on, encouraging us to do the will of the Lord. Let us stand worthy, and be faithful to God?s call?.We must not grow weary?!
If you have never seen it, here is a Eucharistic Flashmob that we plan to do in September in the Local park near my parish:
LONDON (AP) ? Global markets rose Tuesday on signs of improvement in the U.S. housing market and on hopes China will act to support growth in its economy, the world's second-largest.
A survey by S&P/Case Shiller showed home prices rose in major U.S. cities in March for the first time in seven months. Combined with record low mortgage rates and a steady improvement in the labor market, the report suggested that the U.S. property market ? which was at the heart of the global financial crisis in 2008 ? is strengthening.
"With the economic recovery now on firmer ground, we see no reason to alter our view that U.S. house prices have now found a floor," said Ed Stansfield, chief property economist at Capital Economics.
The figures helped offset the impact of a more downbeat report showing U.S. consumer optimism fell in May to the lowest in eight months. The Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index fell to 64.9 points, below analyst expectations.
Also helping sentiment was the expectation that Chinese authorities would relax monetary policy and announce fiscal stimulus measures to offset slowing economic growth.
China is a manufacturer and exporter of consumer goods and closely linked with industries in the U.S. and Europe. Investors have in recent weeks been worrying that its economy may slow down sharply, hurting other markets.
In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 closed 0.7 percent higher at 5,391.14 while Germany's DAX rose 1.2 percent to 6,396.84. The CAC-40 in Paris rose 1.4 percent to 3,084.70.
The euro, however, fell 0.5 percent to $1.2476 after reports that Egan Jones, a minor credit rating agency, downgraded Spain's sovereign debt to B from BB-.
Wall Street rose after a three-day weekend for Memorial Day holiday, with the Dow gaining 0.5 percent to 12,527.98 and the S&P 500 rising 0.5 percent to 1,324.55.
Earlier, markets had been unsettled by concerns that Spain's ailing banking sector might worsen the European debt crisis.
The country's banks are sitting on massive amounts of soured real estate investments. That has led to the recent nationalization of Bankia, the country's fourth-largest lender, which revealed last week it needed more money than expected ? ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) ? in state aid to shore itself up.
Investors fear that the Spanish government, which is already under pressure to lower its debts at a time of recession and record-high unemployment, will be overwhelmed by the cost of saving the country's banking sector.
Those concerns kept pressure on Spain's Ibex, which was down 2.3 percent, with shares in Bankia dropping another 16.2 percent.
The latest bad news to hit the country was a report showing retail sales were down 9.8 percent in April in year-on-year terms, more than double the 3.8 percent fall posted in March.
The figures underlined the brutal impact that government austerity cuts and economic uncertainty are having on households. They also bolster the case for Europe to find new ways to bolster economic growth, though leaders disagree over how to achieve that.
Years of financial and economic uncertainty ? first in the global credit crunch and now in the debt crisis ? have hammered public confidence in the future of European integration, according to a survey by Pew Research across eight European Union countries, including five that use the euro.
"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.
Despite those headwinds, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to abandon the single currency.
Europe's debt crisis will remain a dominant theme for markets for weeks to come as investors gauge the likelihood that Greece might leave the eurozone after elections on June 17. If Greeks vote for parties that support the country's bailout terms, ensuring a continued flow of rescue loans, the country will hope to stay in the eurozone.
The pro-bailout parties hold a narrow lead, according to the latest polls, but uncertainty over the ultimate outcome of the elections will keep market sentiment fragile and prone to swings in mood.
Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.7 percent to close at 8,657.08 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.4 percent to 19,055.46. South Korea's Kospi climbed 1.4 percent after being closed Monday for a public holiday while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.2 percent.
Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 33 cents to $90.53 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) ? Sudan said it would withdraw its army Tuesday from a disputed border region that contains rich oil fields and is contested by neighboring South Sudan.
The decision to pull the military out of Abyei comes as Sudanese officials are scheduled to meet with their South Sudanese counterparts Tuesday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
The talks follow an escalation in fighting between the two sides last month.
Sudanese military spokesman Col. Sawarme Khalid Saad told reporters that the redeployment would help talks with South Sudan.
In a statement issued late Monday, Saad also denied reports that Sudan's army had attacked the disputed north-south border earlier that day.
"We have nothing to do with what happens in the South," Saad said. "The army has not crossed the international frontiers."
South Sudan military spokesman Col. Philip Aguer said Monday the country's Western Bahr-el-Ghazal, Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal and Unity states experienced three days of bombardment by Sudan.
The two countries are set to resume bitter negotiations on issues left over from the 2005 peace deal that eventually saw South Sudan break away from Sudan to form an independent nation in July last year after more than two decades of civil war. Among the most contentious issues are the separation of their once-unified oil industry and the demarcation of the long and ill-defined border.
The negotiations are led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who has been unable to push the two sides closer to a deal.
Sudan's planned withdrawal of troops would be followed by the creation of a police force and parliament for the territory, Khartoum's official in charge of Abyei affairs Al-Khair al-Faheem Mekki told state Radio Omdurman.
The U.N. Security Council this month extended its security force's mission in Abyei, which includes about 4,000 peacekeepers, and demanded that Sudan withdraw their troops from the region following South Sudan's removal of about 700 police officers in early May.
Build the skills, confidence, and flexibility to be an effective live speaker. Plan and organize your thinking so you can get to the point, while also being sensitive to your listeners. Here are some physical delivery skills to communicate with impact, as well as visual aids that will support your ideas:
1. It?s not about YOU. It?s about them, and the ?them? is the audience. The more you know about the listener?s backgrounds, needs and concerns, the more likely you?ll move them to action. What is most important to them?
2. Address the concerns of the audience. Now that you know the concerns of the audience, make sure they know you know. Get that out of the way so that people will trust you as the expert and listen up!
3. Know your objectives. What is the main idea that you want your audience to come away with? Make sure to have a short-term and long-term goal in place before you speak.
4. Create a structure. Outline your ideas beforehand so you have a cohesive story to tell. This might be numbering your three points or presenting the conventional wisdom and knocking it down. Regardless, make sure your structure is easy to follow and take the time to write it down beforehand.
5. Practice really does make perfect. Run through the speech/engagement/meeting with friends, in front of a mirror, or even videotape yourself. The more times you run through, the more comfortable you?ll be and other people may be able to pick up things that you do that you aren?t even aware of.
6. Be yourself. If you?re loud and kooky, it?s okay to bring some of that to your speech. Being someone you?re not never works.
7. Visual aids. Using something awful is way worse than using nothing at all. If you do decide to use something, it should be almost 100% pictures and visuals (like an easy-to-read graph or chart) with just a few large words.
8. Own your physical presence. What you say may not even be as important as how you say it. The three biggest mishaps come with speaking too fast, not making eye contact and not maintaining a firm physical stance.
9. Don?t be afraid of pauses. If you get lost, there is no shame in taking a moment to regain your composure. A well-placed pause is way better than umm-ing your way through your thought process.
10. Question time also deserves some practice. Always pause before you speak and repeat the question in your answer. Be original and sincere. The whole ?that?s a great question, I?m glad you asked it? routine gets a little tired.
11. End with an action step. There should be a clear idea of what you want each person in the audience to ?do? after they leave. It?s always a good idea to reiterate this at the end.

One day, donning a T-shirt could mean you're also sporting a smart device charger. Engineers have successfully transformed cotton into a flexible, highly conductive component, which means it could charge devices.
"In the future, you can imagine our cell phones will be just like a piece of paper you can roll up. But we need to have a flexible energy device to integrate with flexible, stretchable motherboards," said Xiaodong Li, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of South Carolina who led the development with postdoc Lihong Bao. Their article was just published in the journal Advanced Materials ( abstract ).
NEWS: Electronic Tattoo Grafts Gadgets to Skin
Li knows how to be creative with cotton T-shirts. In 2010, he and his colleagues converted one into lightweight body armor by converting the fabric into boron carbide nanowires. So when he began looking for a backbone to make a flexible energy storage device, he turned to a $5 cotton tee from Wal-Mart.
The engineers had to make the cotton highly conductive so they tried several "recipes," Li said. He compared their experiments with trying to replicate a restaurant meal at home without having seen the chef's preparations. First they dipped the cotton in a sodium fluoride solution for an hour, took the wet material and dried it in a preheated oven for three hours. Then they heated it in a hotter furnace for an hour.
By the time it was done, the cotton had changed into activated carbon. Despite being baked, the charred-looking material could still be folded. From there, the engineers coated it with a nano-layer of the conductive metal manganese oxide for the last stage of building their energy storage device.
??Lead researcher Xiaodong Li said his team knew that future body armor would need a flexible power source. And because the scientists work in South Carolina, which used to have a big cotton industry, they thought, 'Why not use a cotton T-shirt as the energy device?'?
??-- Li on his A-Ha! Moment? ? ?
Although others have used cotton in devices, Li said that to the best of his knowledge his research group is the first to activate a cotton T-shirt and build it into a super capacitor. Their device's performance is on par with other carbon-based super capacitors, according to their testing. After 1,000 cycles it had 97.3 percent retention.
"This is a very simple, low-cost process, and it's green," Li said. In addition to starting with a renewable plant-based material, he and his research group estimate that using cotton directly from textile mills could be as much as 10 times cheaper than chemically processing coal or petroleum into activated carbon.
To take his concept to market, the process needs to be scaled up. Li said that for this next phase, he's looking for a potential industry partner. He's also reaching out to state government leaders about using this process to help revive local textile production.
NEWS: Virus-Built Wearable Batteries Could Power Military
Reza Shahbazian-Yassar is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan Technological University who specializes in the application of nanomaterials for different forms of energy storage. He's familiar with the recent Advanced Materials journal article.
"The novelty of this work is that they have converted the fabric using simple heat treatment processes and a little bit of a chemical process," he said. Shahbazian-Yassar sees an advantage in clothing that contains convenient energy storage. Soldiers on the battlefield could use it in military applications, he added.
"The challenge of course is to improve the amount of energy that these fibers can store," he said. The material also has to be able to keep performing well after regular folding and stretching.
Li, who was recently in Beijing to give a presentation, said he envisions a time when academic conference attendees use roll-up electronic posters that include flexible power sources.
"I like to think about the big picture," he said. "Down the road, we will see such cotton-enabled energy devices in the market. We won't need to rely on oil any more."?

When President Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, he gave our nation a far greater gift than marriage equality for millions of gay and lesbian couples. He spent a lot of time "evolving" on the issue, but in the end the President showed us that he would not give way to terrorists, even those "holy terrorists" on the Christian right who threatened God's wrath upon this nation if gays and lesbians were given the rights and protections of marriage.
Fundamentalists, whether Christian, Muslim, or Jew, use violence or the threat of violence to intimidate and coerce, especially for political purposes. Christian terrorists may not strap on bombs or toss hand grenades or spray a sidewalk caf? with automatic weapons. Instead, they promise that their God will do the dirty work for them.
We should not be surprised that holy terrorists use the threat of God's wrath to accomplish their political goals when they use the threat of God's wrath to intimidate or coerce their own children. In spite of all the psychological, scientific, historic, and even biblical evidence to the contrary, Christian pastors, priests, and parents still warn their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender children that God doesn't love them as they are and that if they accept their sexual orientation as good, right, and blessed, God will abandon them to hell.
Playing the "wrath of God" card is not new to American politics. Recent surveys make it clear that the Tea Party movement is simply the old Christian right in disguise. More than half the Tea Party members surveyed believe that the Bible is the literal word of God, that America is a Christian nation, and that public officials should pay more attention to (the Christian) religion. Sixty-three percent believe that abortion should not be legal. Eighty-two percent oppose same-sex marriage. I do not hate my sisters and brothers on the Christian right, but I do fear their growing political power.
Republican candidates for president tripped all over themselves trying to win the hearts and minds of the new/old Christian right. Governor Romney continues to pander and placate. It is no longer just "the economy, stupid." In this election year, democracy is still threatened by theocracy. The Constitution is still threatened by biblical law. And holy terrorists are still using the threat of God's wrath to superimpose their beliefs on the rest of us. Gay Americans should celebrate all the advances being made toward full equality, but we must not forget that the civil and religious rights we have gained are easily reversed if the holy terrorists have their way.
According to the Baltimore Sun, at a hearing on Maryland's proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at American University, was requested to testify. At the end of his testimony, Republican senator Nancy Jacobs said, "As I read Biblical principles, marriage was intended, ordained, and started by God. That is my belief." Raskin replied, "People place their hand on the Bible and swear to uphold the Constitution; they don't put their hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible," eliciting applause from some people in the room.
Unfortunately, too many Americans are not applauding. The Tea Party mentality supports Senator Jacobs when she suggests that the "laws of God" are the ultimate authority over laws and protections based on the U.S. Constitution. The campaign to amend the North Carolina State Constitution was led almost entirely by holy terrorists misusing the Bible to turn ancient superstition and modern ignorance into law.
But I celebrate the fact that for whatever personal and political reasons, our president's support for marriage equality reaffirms his belief that we are not a Christian nation, that in this democracy the Constitution trumps biblical law, and that over the long haul our president will not be held hostage by holy terrorists warning the nation of "God's wrath."
MIAMI (AP) ? Dwyane Wade has been battling knee soreness. LeBron James was hobbling after a falling into a courtside cameraman. Chris Bosh remains sidelined indefinitely with an abdominal strain. Mike Miller looks to be in agony whenever he moves.
An extra day of rest doesn't sound like much, but it means plenty right now to the Miami Heat.
Now halfway to their goal of an NBA championship, the Heat took a welcomed ? and needed ? day off Friday after closing out their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup with the Indiana Pacers.
The East finals open Monday in Miami against either Philadelphia or Boston, teams that will settle their second-round series with a Game 7 on Saturday night.
"We can use it," James said after the Heat ousted the Pacers with a Game 6 win in Indianapolis on Thursday. "Any team in the postseason, any extra day that you can get, it definitely helps us. So we're going to take advantage of it."
It's not like the Heat were planning to sit at home all day, since most players at this time of year tend to hit the training room on off days. Still, for the first time in a while, Friday provided a chance for the reigning East champs to relax a bit, especially after three hard-fought wins in five days allowed Miami to claw back from what was a soon-forgotten 2-1 series deficit to the Pacers.
Wade and James combined to score 197 points in the final three games of the Indiana series, while the Pacers' starters collectively managed 184. Other Heat players stepped up along the way ? Udonis Haslem with 14 points in Game 4, Shane Battier with 13 in Game 5, Miller with 12 in Game 6 ? but with Bosh sidelined, it was Wade and James who welcomed the challenge of having to handle much of the offensive responsibility.
"I don't know if they've been required to shoulder as much responsibility as they've had to now, particularly now that Chris is out," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "And we're making no excuses. We have enough. But they have to give us more and that's what competition will do. You play against good competition in this league and it brings out the best in you ? you hope."
Bosh told ESPN.com this week that he is improving, but stopped short of offering a date for his possible return.
He was hurt midway through Game 1 of the Indiana series, meaning nearly two full weeks have passed since he was diagnosed with a strained lower abdominal muscle. The best-case scenario for recovery for someone with that type of injury is typically 2-3 weeks, though the Heat have never deviated from saying Bosh is out indefinitely.
"I appreciate extra rest," Wade said. "I'm never going to cross my eye on that at all. I feel like it's well-deserved. I think also it gives us an opportunity to get Chris more therapy, more treatment the days that we're off and he moves that much closer to being able to rejoin this ballclub. I thought this was a very physical series ... so the rest will do us some (good)."
The Pacers probably would suggest Wade couldn't get much better than he was in the last 10 quarters of their series.
Wade was awful ? 2 for 13 shooting, five points, five turnovers ? in Game 3, an Indiana blowout that many thought put the Pacers in control of the series. He started Game 4 by missing seven of his first eight shots. And from there, the 2006 finals MVP was in 2006 finals MVP form again: Wade shot 39 for 57 the rest of the series, putting up 41 points and 10 rebounds in Thursday's clincher.
Since 1992, according to STATS LLC, there's been 52 instances of someone having at least 40 points and 10 rebounds in a playoff game. Of those, 50 came from players listed to be at least 6-foot-6. The other two are by Wade, perhaps generously listed at 6-foot-4.
"Spectacular, from the beginning to the end," James said of Wade's Game 6 effort. "He got in a rhythm early and just kept going."
James missed a layup with 1:34 left in the first half on Thursday, his left leg crashing into a television cameraman sitting just beyond the baseline. He was shaken up and briefly tended to on the Heat bench, but played all but 28 seconds of the second half and insisted he was fine afterward. And Miller ? who has dealt with several injuries in his two Miami seasons ? makes running jokes about his health, not even acknowledging things hurt even though he's taken to sitting on the floor during games of late to help stretch his back.
Miller had 10 points in the first five games of the series. His 12 on Thursday came on four 3-pointers, his specialty.
"It's all about opportunity," Miller said. "That's what this team has right now, opportunity."
The way they all see it, the job is only half done. Miami has eight postseason wins. It takes 16 to win an NBA title. So even though some aches and pains are there, it doesn't change the goal.
"It's a no-excuse season," Spoelstra said, a familiar refrain for him in recent weeks. "And this is a no-excuse team."

Your power to hear is an important part of life. In that place are many people who could have more good hearing but do not take advantage of the technology of today. From in this place it is changed to a signal, and from there they are moved to the amplifier and at that time the speaker.
The hearing aid is only beneficial to those who silence have some hair cells left that act. If these cells have been damaged at that time the loss of the ability to hear is called sensorineural. This is a series of Q&As with young and up-and-coming science, health and environmental writers and reporters. They ? at least some of them ? have recently hatched in the Incubators (science writing programs at schools of journalism), have even more recently fledged (graduated), and are now making their mark as wonderful new voices explaining science to the public.
Today we introduce you to Kathleen Raven (blog, Twitter).
Hello, welcome to The SA Incubator. Let?s start from the beginning: where are you originally from?
I grew up in rural Georgia, in a one-stoplight town, much like a setting for one of Flannery O?Connor?s Southern Gothic stories. Nature nurtured me. In springtime as a youngster, I caught tadpoles, plopped them in a Mason jar of lake water and assigned names (because tadpoles can easily be distinguished). Every night, stars lit up a black sky brighter than the best LED screen money can buy. My father taught me to identify trees in the forest. A blissful place to grow up.
How did you get into science and how did you get into writing? And how did these two trajectories fuse into becoming a science writer?
Writing came first. At age 12, I published a newsletter for my neighborhood and had the nerve to charge for subscriptions. The Iowa Young Writers Workshop accepted me into their summer writing program one year before I could legally drive. In high school, I worked for our county?s weekly newspaper. Every Wednesday afternoon, we pasted pages together using hot wax and blueprint paper. Old school, eh?! After high school, Elon University in North Carolina accepted me into its Communications Fellows program. I studied there two years. A knee injury forced me to give up a partial NCAA track-and-field scholarship and I moved back home to attend the University of Georgia.
Science stayed along the peripheries throughout high school and college. A writer writes; a scientist experiments?and never the two shall meet, or so I thought. The passionate science professor who dazzles minds and sparks passions never appeared in my life. By the time I finished my undergraduate studies in journalism, newspapers offered a solid career path. (Ha!) I planned to hustle until my byline appeared in TheNew York Times. Conrad Fink, a beloved journalism professor, encouraged me toward that goal. As we all know, the cogs of print journalism began to slow considerably in 2007. At that time I worked as a general assignment reporter at a mid-sized daily in Atlanta. I saw the writing on the wall and it read, ?Specialize, specialize, specialize.?
Once more, I packed my bags and headed to Athens. My love of nature and insatiable curiosity of how things work led me to study ecosystem ecology in a program founded by Eugene Odum, a world-renown ecologist, at UGA. My master?s of science thesis examines how scientists, by working across disciplines, break down academic silos, and therefore can better communicate ecological and scientific concepts to the public. Halfway through that program, while I kept a 40-hour-a-week job, a thought occurred to me: Hey, I want to write about medicine and health, too. My mother recently retired from a lifetime of nursing. My maternal grandmother also made her living as a registered nurse. I was born with severe asthma and spent many nights as a 3-year-old with a plastic oxygen tent perched over my bed. Personal health quickly became an important concept and remains so to me. The idea of writing stories at the intersections of ecology, health and medicine appealed to me.
Why did you decide to attend a specialized science/health/environmental writing program instead of a generalized journalism or writing program, or just starting a blog and hoping to break into the science writing business?
One day in 2010, Pat Thomas, who directs the Knight Foundation Health & Medical Journalism graduate program at UGA, made me an offer I couldn?t refuse. She invited me to enroll in her introductory course on public health reporting. This sounded like a good excuse to interview real people dealing with tangible problems, which was something I missed while immersed in my science program. In that course, we covered randomized controlled double-blind studies, internal and external validity, absolute risk and publication bias, and a ton of other must-know medical research terms. No matter how much of a lifelong learner you may be, the structure and rigor offered by a specialized writing program forces you to expand your knowledge by leaps and bounds. Pat wielded powerful lessons with her red pen. Without her editing and teaching, my writing would still be vague and verbose.
Which science writing program did you attend? Why did you choose that one? What are your best experiences there?
Right now one semester remains before the end of my studies in the Health & Medical Journalism graduate program at UGA. Certainly the program has required intense writing and rigorous research using databases like PubMed and the Cochrane Library. But the HMJ curriculum also focuses heavily on multimedia skills. Video is now an integral component of online science communication. We learned to create professional quality videos. If I never knew how to properly film interviews, background images and edit using Final Cut Pro software, then I?d be dead in the competitive waters of science communication. Besides, journalists who stay locked in a video editing lab until midnight are not so unlike the scientists who skip dinner to stay at the bench: both want concrete results to share with the world.
The best parts? Our cohort witnessed the opening of the university?s first medical school in fall 2010. A colleague and I interviewed the medical college dean, which resulted in a video I filmed and edited. During that semester, we logged many hours with the new medical students and I felt quite lucky to observe the goings-on inside a medical school. Along the way, I learned about cell communication and why inflammation helps heal a wound. This past April, I attended the TEDMED conference in Washington, D.C., and shook hands with Jay Walker, who curates the event. Most of all, I appreciate the camaraderie I have with my colleagues in the program, both present and past. We help each other get to the top and such altruism is hard to find.
What professional experience you have had so far ? publications, internships, jobs? Feel free to include a bunch of links here! What is your current job?
Earlier this month I completed a yearlong science/medical writing assistantship with the UGA News Service. I interviewed top-tier scientists and wrote news releases about fascinating research on a whole gamut of subjects, including nanoparticle cancer therapy and hypoxia in cells.
Now, in less than one week, I will be the science writing intern at Nature Medicine in New York City for six months. The opportunity to cover cancer biology, cardiovascular research, gene therapy, immunology, and neuroscience, among other subjects, at an academic journal with the top impact factor in its field is beyond thrilling. I may just break out in song right now. I?ll be posting stories on Nature Medicine?s blog, called Spoonful of Medicine, and will also write news briefs and features stories.
Do you write a personal or science blog (URLs)? How much do you use social media networks, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Tumblr, Pinterest, Flickr, YouTube etc., to promote your own and your friends? work, to learn and to connect?
I started a blog in 2011 after attending the Science Online conference in Raleigh, N.C. Like the shoe cobbler?s children, though, it has been much neglected. My plan is to incorporate the blog more with my online portfolio. I am a huge fan of social media. I think it allows us to know people we otherwise could never have met and results in a tremendous cross-pollination of ideas. I use Twitter and Facebook to keep up with what my friends had for breakfast that day, but also to know what they are reading, studying, researching, writing about. To a lesser extent I use Google Plus, YouTube and Flickr. I use a professional photo-sharing site called SmugMug. And while I?ve visited plenty of Tumblr and Pinterest sites, I haven?t caught on to those yet.
Social media, as we call it, creates this incredibly rich ecosystem of information and it?s up to each of us, and especially myself, to check links, think critically, research facts that seem out of place or hard to believe. When Gutenberg invented movable type, suddenly the dissemination of information was out of the monks? hands, and there was much hemming and hawing. The fact is that we?re not going back to the gatekeepers of newspapers and major broadcast companies. Instead, we are training ourselves to think more critically, separate the wheat from the chaff.
Apart from writing, do you also do other aspects of science communication, e.g., podcasts, video, art/illustration, photography, infographics, or do you do any coding, web design and programming?
I love working with audio and video, and I?ve done a fair amount of work with video, and less with podcast-only audio, though I?m certified in the Soundtrack Pro editing software and would love to use those skills more often. Photography has been a love of mine since I developed photographs in the darkroom at the local newspaper. Now I carry a Canon 7D with me wherever I can (it weighs about 10 pounds) to shoot still and moving images. I don?t have any experience with coding, web design, or programming, but I?m always keen to learn new skills to present information in engaging, colorful and things-that-make-you-go-hmm sort of ways.
How do you see the current and future science media ecosystem, how it differs from the past, and what role will new, young science communicators like yourself play in building it and making it the best it can be?
Information collides towards us at such insane rates, on our computers and tablets, and it?s quite different from the days of sitting down with the morning newspaper and contemplating the news of day?which I still make a point to do every day with The Wall Street Journal. We are ourselves becoming conditioned to expect instantaneous responses via phone texts, Facebook comments and Twitter direct messages. This expectation increases the speed of how we perceive time and also information. We are left with an increased amount of information, but less time to process it. One advantage of the old gatekeeper media model was that readers saved time by letting news professionals decide the important facts of the day. I?m not nostalgic for a bygone; history provides us plenty examples of poor editors (Hearst and the Spanish-American War, anyone?). However, in the current science media ecosystem, we have placed the onus of fact-checking on ourselves. I worry about the integrity of information. Computer programmers and code developers may one day soon come up with ?truth goggles,? which we can use to verify information on the Internet. But critical thinking skills and strong writing skills should not be sacrificed for the purpose of spreading lots of information through blogs and social media. It?s a balance, like everything up.
I?m concerned that my five-year-old nephew, a professional whiz on the iPad, will grow up without ever experiencing boredom. Long, contemplative moments away from our glowing screens are crucial to our forward progress in creativity, science and writing.
Thanks!
Thank you for having me!
