What's the Best Time of Year For Online Dating?

The above chart, created by David McCandles, represents the times during the year in which couples tend to break-up. The data, collected from FaceBook profiles awhile back, is quite interesting and shows two obvious peaks, right before Spring break and two weeks before Christmas. This makes sense if you think about it and there is a good explanation from Brad at Little Red Rails blog for why this is. However, I?d like to take a moment now and talk about why the Autumn months are in my opinion, and based on the graph above, THE best months to delve into the online dating world.

First off, lets ignore for a second that there are a large number of people who break up just before Christmas time and think about what most people like to gossip about when they get together with their family and friends during the holidays from Thanksgiving to New Years Eve. From my observations, most of that holiday gossip revolves around relationships, particularly new relationships ? who?s seeing who, how?d you meet, I met the greatest guy, etc, etc. People, and women in particular love heading back to their respective family functions proclaiming their new love interest. And this period is the catalyst for what some people in the seduction industry call ?doe season?, which are the Autumn months leading up to the holidays.

There are few reasons for this:

• Autumn is a busy time of year for most people, college classes are just getting underway, many businesses are gearing up for Holiday sales and overall there just isn?t a lot of time, leaving many to resort to dating online, rather than going out.
• As mentioned above many women want to be dating someone for a few months leading up to the Holiday?s in order to brag or bring with them to meet families and friends.
• In many places it starts getting colder and darker earlier in the day, so people aren?t going out as much, and again more likely to stay in and try their luck at online dating.
• One aspect that is mostly overlooked, particularly for men, is that people are able to dress up more and hopefully better in the cooler climate. Rather than your casual wear resorting to shorts, t-shirt and flip flops in the summer time; you can now break out the nice long sleeve button downs, cardigans, sweater vests, pea coats, leather shoes, etc. These are all the clothing choices that can help give a man that extra little boost when meeting up in real life with his online dating prospects.

Now I know what you?re going to say, if the Fall is the best time to meet women online than why are there so many people breaking up two weeks before Christmas? Well, I have a hypothesis on why this might be true. Though there are a lot of people meeting and dating in the Fall, it usually only takes about one to two months before you REALLY get to know that person you met. And faced with the looming catalyst of the holidays, those potential relationships that aren?t quite as good as we imagined now find themselves ready to be discarded for fear of judgement from family and friends.

So there you have it folks, the best time of year for online dating, but be careful who you pick as the end point of that relationship could be just around corner.

Chris Christie and Sarah Palin have dominated much of the discussion about potential dark horse candidates in the 2012 Republican presidential primary. But Rudy Giuliani is doing his best to keep his name in the race.

Per the Associated Press's Steve Peoples, Jake Menges, one of Giuliani's closest political advisers, met with key Republicans in New Hampshire this week to urge them to hold off endorsing in the primary until his boss decides whether he's running.

"Jake said to me, 'Just keep your powder dry for another few weeks,' " Stephen Talarico, a prominent GOP activist, told the AP.

Giuliani has been cagey for months about whether he'll run in 2012--suggesting he'd like to jump in the race, but admitting his moderate brand of politics wouldn't fare well in the contest. Last month, he said he'd run if the party was "desperate."

Couples Counseling Boosts Sex Lives After Prostate Cancer (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Sept. 26 (HealthDay News) -- The side effects of prostate cancer treatments, including surgery and radiation, can seriously disrupt a couple's sex life.

But a new study finds that counseling helped married men and women figure out what sorts of treatments for erectile dysfunction worked for them and how to incorporate those methods during sex. In doing so, they returned some luster to their love lives.

Researchers enrolled more than 200 men who'd been treated for prostate cancer and their wives into one of three groups: one received three face-to-face counseling sessions; the other was offered Internet-based counseling; and the third was put on a wait list.

At a six-month follow-up (about three months after counseling), men who received either the face-to-face or web-based counseling reported an improvement in sexual function and satisfaction with sex. When the man reported his sexual function improved, his wife's reports of sexual function and satisfaction did as well.

Those in the wait-listed group experienced no improvements, suggesting that "time alone doesn't heal the issues," said study author Leslie Schover, a professor of behavioral science and a clinical psychologist at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

The study is published in the Sept. 26 online issue of Cancer.

Despite nerve-sparing surgery, prostate cancer treatment still causes significant erectile dysfunction, experts say. Other problems may include difficulty reaching orgasm; decreased intensity of orgasm; pain and leaking urine at orgasm.

Many men who have prostate cancer are older, and their erectile function may have already been compromised due to the cancer itself or other underlying vascular or nerve disease, explained Dr. Bruce Gilbert, director of reproductive and sexual medicine at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System's Smith Institute for Urology.

"Before nerve-sparing prostatectomy [surgical removal of the prostate], 100 percent of men would have erectile dysfunction afterward," Gilbert said. "That has come down quite a bit. But you are dealing with a population of men who are generally not 30 or 40 years old. They're older and may already have an underlying problem with erectile dysfunction."

Most men have some level of erection difficulties after prostate cancer surgery, experts said.

In addition to dealing with that, "the counseling program focused on the woman's right to pleasure in sex and on fixing problems like postmenopausal vaginal dryness or loss of desire related to poor sexual communication," Schover said.

"We educated both partners about available treatments to restore erections and had them complete a 'decision aid' to figure out what treatment to try, based on mutual opinions," she said. "If that treatment did not work well for them, we encouraged them to try another choice."

After prostrate cancer, many men try pills for erectile dysfunction, experts said. But those may not be enough. Other options include penile injections, vacuum pumps and or penile implants, but Schover said she suspects many men throw in the towel when they don't get the results they want and don't pursue the other alternatives.

Men and women were given questionnaires that asked about a wide variety of measures of sexual function and sexual satisfaction, including their erectile function (for men), ability to achieve orgasm and their level of desire.

"Every subscale improved except desire, which we weren't surprised by because very few had low desire to begin with, so there wasn't that far to go on that," Schover said.

Men's ability to achieve "near-normal" erections also improved after counseling. Before counseling, about 12 percent to 15 percent of men reported few erection difficulties. That increased to between 36 percent and 44 percent for those who underwent counseling.

At one year, men who reported that they found a successful erectile dysfunction treatment had scores on the sexual function and satisfaction scale that were about the same as healthy men.

One limitation of the study is that about 34 percent of couples enrolled in the counseling dropped out for unknown reasons, said Dr. Bruce Gilbert, director of reproductive and sexual medicine at the Smith Institute for Urology at North Shore LIJ Health System.

Still, he added, "a study like this is very important and highlights that there is a lot that happens if you engage couples or the patient in some type of counseling," Gilbert said.

Couples and physicians should also never forget that while prostate cancer is frightening, so is the worry that even if it's cured, "they may not be the same after a procedure than before," Gilbert said. "That's a real fear for men."

Ideally, patients should start "penile rehabilitation" even prior to having the treatment, which has been shown to improve outcomes.

Urologists should be able to suggest methods of improving erectile function, experts noted. They suggested that if you're not getting all the help you need from your urologist, ask for a referral to a urologist that specializes in sexual medicine, or a mental health professional that treats issues related to cancer treatment, often found at large teaching hospitals in major cities.

Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, a urologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said "the idea of providing Internet-based counseling to couples experiencing sexual dysfunction after prostate surgery is excellent."

"This study proves that patients and their partners respond to instructive sex therapy. Since insurance coverage for psychotherapy is sparse, it is encouraging to know that web-based help is available to these couples," Kavaler said.

Amazon unveils Kindle Fire tablet, priced at $199 (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Amazon.com Inc introduced its eagerly awaited tablet computer on Wednesday with a price tag that could make it the first strong competitor in a tablet market that has been dominated by Apple Inc's iPad.

The new device, priced at $199, may have the biggest impact on other makers of tablets and e-readers, such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Barnes & Noble Inc, maker of the Nook.

"It's a Nook killer," said Scot Wingo, chief executive of ChannelAdvisor, which helps merchants sell more on websites including Amazon.com. "And it's a very compelling offering if you're not in the Apple ecosystem already."

The Kindle Fire tablet has a 7-inch screen, free data storage over the Internet and a new browser called Amazon Silk. Amazon expects shipments to start on November 15.

Amazon also introduced the Kindle Touch, an e-reader with no buttons and a touch screen starting at $99. And it cut the price of its basic Kindle e-reader to $79 from $99.

"These are premium products at non-premium prices," Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said. "We are going to sell millions of these."

Amazon shares rose 4.7 percent to $234.72 in midday trading, while Barnes & Noble dropped 9.8 percent to $11.92. Apple shares edged up 0.3 percent to $400.55.

Analysts had expected Amazon's tablet to be priced around $250, roughly half the price of Apple's dominant iPad, which starts at $499. The Nook Color e-reader costs $249.

"Expect a blood bath as pricing will have to get extremely aggressive," said Mark Gerber, an analyst at Detwiler Fenton & Co. He expects Amazon to sell at least 3 million Kindle Fires this holiday season, taking the No. 2 spot in the tablet market.

Having its own tablet is important for Amazon because the company has amassed a mountain of digital goods and services that could be sold through such a device.

Cooking can be an art, a hobby, and even a business. Great chefs make it a combination of all the above. However, everyone starts out somewhere ? Simple recipes and cookbooks that guide us step-by-step on how to make a good tasting meal.

Say your a mom that cooks for her family and is tired of hearing her family tell her that her cooking that she worked so hard to prepare is just alright. Alright might sound alright, but to you those words are pretty harsh; I?m not a mom, but I know the feeling. Maybe it wasn?t my cooking ability, but the food I was making, or the old family cookbook I was following. I started searching and eventually I found the best cookbook for me and my family. I made a full course meal straight from restaurant based recipes out of the cookbook, and for the first time in years my family told me how amazing they?re dinner was. The feeling was great. Not just being told that my cooking was amazing, but I felt like I could make anything.

Maybe your just starting out in the culinary world. Whether just because you like doing it, or you love it enough to start a career in it, you need to start somewhere. That somewhere can be with someone who can teach you how to cook, but odds are you don?t have a neighbor that?s a professional chef. All in all, from my own personal experience, the best cookbook you can use are ones that have those time tested and proved recipes. You really can?t do much better than learning for yourself how to make your favorite restaurants ?secret? recipes to share with your friends and family!

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas strongly suggested Saturday that he would reject a peacemaking blueprint put forward by international mediators, saying he would not agree to any proposal that disregarded Palestinian conditions for the resumption of peace talks.

Abbas, who returned to the West Bank on Saturday after submitting a statehood bid at the United Nations a day earlier, told reporters accompanying him that he was still studying the proposal by the peacemaking Quartet ? the U.S., European Union, United Nations and Russia.

But he appeared to tip his hand by saying "we will not deal with any initiative" that doesn't demand a halt to Israeli settlement construction or negotiations based on borders before the 1967 War when Israel captured land the Palestinians claim for their state.

The Quartet statement made no such demands.

Abbas dug into his positions after resisting heavy, U.S.-led pressure to abandon his bid to have the U.N. recognize a state of Palestine in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. His willingness to stand up to Washington has won him newfound respect at home, where he had been considered a lackluster leader. The unilateral bid for statehood and U.N. membership reflects deep-seated Palestinian exasperation over 44 years of Israeli occupation.

Israel has had no comment on the Quartet plan to resume long-stalled negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel, which mediators regard as the only way to establish a Palestinian state. Israeli leader Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the long-standing conditions Abbas has put forth, saying talks must go forward without imposing terms.

Netanyahu opposes negotiations based on 1967 lines, saying a return to those frontiers would expose Israel's heartland to rocket fire from the West Bank. And he says the fate of settlements should be left to negotiations.

The Quartet urged both parties to draw up an agenda for peace talks within a month and produce comprehensive proposals on territory and security within three months. Mediators aspire to a final deal within a year, but similar plans have failed to produce a peace agreement in the past, and this latest proposal offered no program for bridging the huge differences that have stymied negotiations for most of the past three years.

The Quartet plan was meant to rechannel to negotiations any momentum the Palestinians would gain from their statehood application. A U.N. nod would not deliver any immediate changes on the ground: Israel would remain an occupying force in the West Bank and east Jerusalem and continue to restrict access to Gaza, ruled by Palestinian Hamas militants.

But Palestinians are hoping that any upgrade in their international status would give them more clout in any future talks with Israel.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon relayed the Palestinians' statehood request to the Security Council on Friday, shortly after Abbas formally submitted it. It is expected to be shot down there, either because it won't win the required support of nine of the Council's 15 members, or because the U.S. will make good on its threat to veto it. The Security Council will meet Monday to deal with the membership request, but final action is likely to take weeks or months.

Washington has been lobbying hard to muster enough support in the Council to block the statehood application so the U.S. won't have to resort to a veto ? something that would be frowned upon by the Arab world at a time when autocratic regimes are coming under assault there.

Abbas told reporters, without explaining, that he expected the Council to take action within weeks, not months. With Council support necessary to be admitted to the U.N. as a state, the Palestinians are expected to ask the U.N. General Assembly, where they enjoy broad support, to grant them a more modest status upgrade to nonmember observer state from permanent observer.

On board his plane, Abbas described himself as exhausted by the international efforts to wear him down but buoyant when he explained in a speech to the General Assembly why he had sidestepped the negotiating process that had been the cornerstone of international Mideast policy for nearly two decades.

The pressure "didn't affect our spirits to reach the target and to deliver the Palestinian message officially," he said.

Abbas noted, without elaborating, that some unspecified Arab states had also tried to pressure him to drop the statehood application.

Netanyahu, too, has been satisfied with the trip, and by the efforts of the U.S. and Western powers to resolve the longstanding conflict through talks, not international dictates.

"The hope is that the Palestinians will eventually understand that they cannot avoid entering negotiations," he told Israel's Channel 10 TV.

Talks for all intents and purposes broke down nearly three years ago after Israel went to war in Gaza and prepared to hold national elections that propelled Netanyahu to power for a second time. A last round, backed by the U.S., was launched a year ago, with the ambitious aim of producing a framework accord for a peace deal. But it broke down just three weeks later after an Israeli settlement construction slowdown expired.

DETROIT - Jim Leyland would have loved to see Justin Verlander make a little more history on Saturday night.

In a way, though, he's happy he didn't.

Verlander allowed five runs in the first three innings, and ended up with a no-decision in Detroit's 6-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. That ended his winning streak at 12 straight and meant that he won't be the first 25-game winner in more than 20 years.

"Our guys were really trying to get back into the game and help Justin get that win, but in some ways, it is better that it is over," Leyland said. "Now he doesn't have to answer questions every day about the streak and he doesn't have to answer questions about 25 wins. He can just get ready for his first start in the playoffs."

Leyland was much happier about the way Verlander responded to the terrible start, retiring 13 of his last 14 batters.

"I honestly think he took a step forward in his career tonight," Leyland said. "He wasn't getting ahead of guys, and he got down by five runs, but he kept making adjustments and he finished with four shutout innings that gave us a chance to win."

Verlander, who last lost on July 15, was bidding to become the first pitcher to win 13 starts in a row since Ellis Kinder of the Boston Red Sox in 1949, according to STATS LLC. The major league record of 21 was set by the Philadelphia Athletics' Lefty Grove in 1931.

Verlander broke the previous Tigers record of wins in 11 straight starts, shared by Earl Whitehill (1930) and Hal Newhouser (1946).

"I haven't been paying too much attention to the streak, except when people ask me about it," he said. "So I'm not worried that it is gone, and I don't care that I didn't get the loss tonight. We lost. That's all that matters."

The Tigers also fell a game back of AL West champion Texas in the race for the league's second seed.

The Orioles scored five times in the first three innings. Matt Angle started the game with a homer, J.J. Hardy hit a two-run single in Baltimore's three-run second and Mark Reynolds hit his 37th homer in the third inning.

Verlander's next start will come in Game 1 of the AL division series.

"I wasn't executing my pitches, so I was falling behind guys and they were taking advantage," he said. "Hopefully, I'm going to have five or six more starts this season, and this one won't have mattered."

With the game tied at 5, Chris Davis started the ninth with a single off Daniel Schlereth (2-2). Kyle Hudson ran for him and went from first to third on a wild pitch that struck out Robert Andino. Angle then laid down a perfect squeeze to put the Orioles in front.

Leyland and Orioles manager Buck Showalter that the winning play came down to one veteran manager outguessing the other one.

"Jimmy's done that to me a million times, which is why he's one of the best managers in the game," Showalter said. "We were lucky. Very lucky."

Leyland said he thought Showalter would try the squeeze, but didn't know when.

"I suspected it might be coming but, obviously, I didn't guess the right pitch," he said.

For Angle, the day started with his first homer ? he had never hit more than four in a minor-league season ? then included a game-winning bunt and a shaving-cream pie in the face during a postgame interview.

"This was a good night, filled with a lot of firsts," he said. "I'm going to remember this for a long time."

Pedro Strop (2-1) picked up the win, and Kevin Gregg pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.

The Orioles almost had an even bigger start, but Austin Jackson made a spectacular over-the-shoulder basket catch to rob Adam Jones of extra bases in the second. After the game, Leyland compared it to the most famous catch in baseball history - the one made by Willie Mays in the 1954 World Series.

"If you are a baseball fan, you've been seeing a catch like that one for the last 50 or 60 years ? Willie's catch," he said. "This one doesn't take second place to that one or anything else. That was just an unbelievable catch."

Jackson hit an RBI single in the third, and Detroit added two more in the fourth. Alex Avila drove in Miguel Cabrera with a groundout, and Jhonny Peralta added a sacrifice fly.

Cabrera hit his 28th homer in the sixth and Peralta added a tying RBI single against Strop in the eighth, giving Verlander a no-decision.

NOTES: Verlander has gone at least six innings in 42 straight starts, including all 34 this year. That's the longest streak for a Tiger since at least 1919, passing Hal Newhouser's streak of 41 in 1944-45. ... The game drew a season-high 44,846 fans. ... The series finale on Sunday matches Detroit's Brad Penny (10-11) against Baltimore's Brian Matusz (1-8). Matusz enters the game with a 10.68 ERA, the worst in history by any starter with 10 or more starts, and would have to pitch 6 2-3 shutout innings to avoid breaking Edgar Gonzalez's record of 9.32 in 2004. ... Vladimir Guerrero picked up his 2,586th career hit, tying Julio Franco for the most by a Dominican player.

Bluetooth devices security risks rising : research (Reuters)

HELSINKI (Reuters) ? Finnish data security firm Codenomicon says software faults in Bluetooth devices are becoming easier to exploit, putting users at risk.

Bluetooth radio technology is widely used to link cellphones to their accessories, and its security has not been considered a major problem.

Codenomicon, however, said in a research paper that it found critical problems in all Bluetooth-enabled car-kits it tested this year.

Bluetooth car-kits allow users to talk hands-free while they drive. Faulty security can give criminals access to information on users' phones, and coding errors could lead to damage to the car's electronic system and put drivers' safety at risk.

"The problems are in the implementation. Coders make human mistakes," technology chief Ari Takanen told Reuters on Friday, adding that deciding which device was more secure was very difficult.

"Quality of the software is rarely visible to consumers."

Bluetooth industry lobby Bluetooth SIG, when asked to comment on the findings, said the technology was secure.

"One of the reasons these members pick Bluetooth wireless technology is because of the strong security Bluetooth technology can provide through effective implementations by the OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) who build these products," said Mike Foley, Bluetooth SIG's executive director.

Obama challenges Boehner, McConnell on home turf (AP)

CINCINNATI ? Needling his top Republican adversaries on their own turf, President Barack Obama stood in the shadow of an outdated and heavily used Ohio River bridge Thursday and called his rivals out by name to demand action on his $447 billion jobs bill.

Making a point to choose a bridge linking House Speaker John Boehner's home state of Ohio with Kentucky, the home of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, Obama struck a cheeky tone that underscored the politics of the moment.

"Mr. Boehner, Mr. McConnell, help us rebuild this bridge," he declared. "Help us rebuild America. Help us put construction workers back to work. Pass this bill."

The president's incursion into northern Kentucky and southern Ohio is one of his most direct and defiant challenges to leaders of the opposition party. And it illustrated a desire by the president's advisers to distinguish him from Republicans and to get them to share some of the blame for the struggling economy.

Rejected as pure politics by Boehner and McConnell, the president's in-your-face approach showed no sign of changing any minds in Congress.

It also was a shift from the president's outreach to Boehner this summer, when the two men tried to work out a deal that would extend the nation's borrowing authority and cut long-term deficits as well.

Then, the president took Boehner golfing. Now, he's taking him to task.

"Part of the reason I came here is because Mr. Boehner and Mr. McConnell ? those are the two most powerful Republicans in government," Obama said. "They can either kill this jobs bill, or they can help pass this jobs bills."

Obama said his legislation would put construction workers back to work around the country on projects like the Brent Spence Bridge, but the White House readily conceded that the choice of the aging span south of Cincinnati was symbolic. The bridge is scheduled to be repaired anyway starting in 2015.

"We have never suggested that ground would be broken on this project immediately," press secretary Jay Carney said on Air Force One en route to Ohio, though he said the president's job bill could speed up that timeline.

By selecting Ohio, Obama also raised his profile in politically important Ohio, a state that he won in 2008 but that George W. Bush also won twice. The Cincinnati Enquirer, however, greeted his visit with a downbeat banner front page headline: "Obama visit won't build new bridge."

McConnell and Boehner, both of whom have supported the bridge project, dismissed the visit as a political ploy.

"I would suggest, Mr. President, that you think about ways to actually help the people of Kentucky and Ohio, instead of how you can use their roads and bridges as a backdrop for making a political point," McConnell said on the Senate floor Thursday morning. "If you really want to help our state, then come back to Washington and work with Republicans on legislation that will actually do something to revive our economy and create jobs. And forget the political theater."

Said Boehner: "I am pleased the president is bringing attention to this much-needed project. But you know now is not the time for the president to go into campaign mode."

Both McConnell and Boehner oppose Obama's plans to pay for his jobs measures with new taxes, and his jobs package faces a tough fight on Capitol Hill, despite the aggressive campaign he's embarked on to sell it.

In the very short term, Obama's visit was making traffic on the overloaded 1963 bridge worse, not better. Ohio and Kentucky transportation officials warned motorists to expect long delays around the time of the president's appearance Thursday afternoon because of lane closures and a ramp shutdown. Boehner joked that stopping bridge traffic won't win any votes.

The trip illustrated the various ways a president can use the power of his office and the megaphone it provides to push for his initiatives and score political points. Presidents often use their travel to get beyond the Washington debate and try to build support with the public. Though it's not common for presidents to brazenly challenge opposition leaders in their backyards, Obama has shown no qualms about venturing into Republican territory. His first speech after announcing his jobs bill this month was in Richmond, in the congressional district of House Republican Leader Eric Cantor.

Last year, Obama traveled to Ohio just days after Boehner delivered a speech on the economy in Cleveland for his policy proposals.

Presidents also often take local politicians with them on Air Force One when they travel. In this case, both Boehner and McConnell declined a White House invitation to attend Thursday's event, because Congress is in session. Obama did travel with Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, who is pushing an alternative proposal for bridge and road projects.

"I know these men care about their states. And I can't imagine that the speaker wants to represent a state where nearly one in four bridges is classified as substandard. I know that when Sen. McConnell visited the closed bridge in Kentucky, he said that `roads and bridges are not partisan in Washington,'" Obama said.

"Well, if that's the case, then there's no reason for Republicans in Congress to stand in the way of more construction projects. There's no reason to stand in the way of more jobs."

Nowhere to be found in Obama's speech was his admonition of late for members of Congress to put "country before party." Instead, he went after the leaders of Congress by party. With public opinion polls show only about one person in four approves of Obama's economic performance, he's trying to put his differences with the GOP into sharper focus.
