Week 2 Fantasy Football 2011 Breakdown

By Antonio D?Arcangelis

This column addresses some of the fallout from Sunday?s games and provides some notes into the Monday night action. Lots of players hurting after this weekend, but plenty of emerging talent from the fringes?

  • The biggest news on Monday was the injury status of Jamaal Charles (confirmed lost for the year with an ACL tear), Tony Romo?s cracked rib (which is accompanied by a punctured lung ? ouch) and Michael?s Vick?s head (concussed during the second half after colliding helmets with a teammate on his way down). There?s been no speculation on the availability of either for next week.
  • In my second bullet last week, I noted four QBs who may be for real this season: Cam Newton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Rex Grossman and Chad Henne ? and four QBs who may not: Kyle Orton, Donovan McNabb, Matt Cassel and Luke McCown. While Henne?s Week 2 wasn?t brilliant, Newton, Fitpatrick and Grossman kept up the solid numbers, and the latter four (excluding Orton, who got the W and threw for 195-2-0) left much to be desired. It?s safe to say these eight QBs have continued their respective ascension/descension up the fantasy rankings heading into Week 3.
  • The Cowboys blew it last Sunday night, but Sunday afternoon showed me that Romo can still be a quality playoff QB. The guys that lead their team back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter ? especially playing through what I can only assume was some brutal pain ? are the guys I want playing for me. Romo?s proactive sideline approach with former reality show winner Jesse Holley displayed the kind of leadership necessary to overcome some of the obstacles the dynamic Cowboys are sure to face this season.
  • A day after Week 2 wraps up, and I?m already ready to revise my Super Bowl prediction (which was Packers over Chargers). I?m not convinced that anyone can beat the Patriots right now, and the upstart Lions could be the best team in the NFC ? if they can stay healthy.
  • I?m quite enamored with Fred Jackson, who I grabbed in just about every fantasy league I joined this season. His monster day (and excellent blocking) helped pave the way for an impressive Bills passing attack. If opposing teams are forced to consider the run, it?ll pay huge dividends for all of the Bills other skill positions. Steve Johnson, David Nelson, Donald Jones and Scott Chandler may not be household names, but they will all be known to fantasy owners in good time. The Chan Gailey play-calling approach (OC and running backs coach Curtis Modkins is the ?coordinator? in name only) is predicated on establishing the running game and allowing players to be themselves ? the sharp-but-loose Fitzpatrick included.
  • The Giants offense struggled to convert third downs again in the first half on Monday night, and generally looked out of sorts at many times during the game. But the defense made enough crucial plays to keep the Rams from mounting any kind of real threat. Other, more talented red zone offenses will present more of a problem. You can?t give up 331 yards to a team without an elite receiver and expect to compete. The Giants had absolutely no answer for Danario Alexander. Aaron Ross had such a hard time containing the 6-5 Alexander that he was benched briefly during the second half and replaced with journeyman CB Michael Coe, who then got burned himself.
  • As mobile as Eli Manning has looked in the past, he?s really having a hard time sensing pressure and getting rid of the football. There was one empty-backfield play where it was assumed that if the Rams blitzed everybody, Manning would spot a hot receiver and dump it off. He literally stood there and watched the defenders come and sack him. He barely even moved. Not good, Giants fans.
  • With the game under two minutes facing a 4th and 28 and impending kneel time, the Rams chose to punt. Can anyone explain this to me? I don?t care how deep ?in my own territory I am, if I?m guaranteed a loss by punting and not at least heaving one up field in the hopes of a first down conversion or possible penalty, I?m going for it. Since when do NFL teams give up the game in favor of preferable field position? Weird.
  • Sam Bradford rarely makes a bad pass. He looks sharp on pretty much all the throws, in the pocket and out, and his ability to throw to his receivers strengths (low for shifty, speedy types; high for tall, physical wideouts) is a oft-ignored quality that says a lot about a QB. It?s a shame he doesn?t have his best possession receiver (Danny Amendola) for a while, because against a team with decent corners, he?s going to need him.
  • A post-game update on the Miles Austin injury confirmed that the Week 2 standout could be out until Week 6 with his hamstring strain, although nobody?s certain about anything at this point. Dez Bryant should be ready to go by next Monday night, so he should be the main statistical beneficiary of the Austin injury. But Holley and Kevin Ogletree could also emerge as viable fantasy options. At one point, Austin was just another Cowboy receiver on the fringe ? and all he needed was an opportunity in this explosive offense to shine.
