The World News Newsfeed: May 2012 - Failbook - FAIL Blog

312 million citizens including the immigrant population.

Which is another thing that bugs me. Illegal problem? What illegal problem. Historically the percentage of immigrants (illegal or legal) in the US compared to native born population has been between 7% and 15% We are actually right on track with a total of 33 or so million immigrants in the US. Of those between 7 and 20 million are illegals (the 33 million figure takes into account 12 million illegals).

There are between 28 and 41 million immigrants in the US, of which between 7 and 20 are illegal. Which means immigrants make up between 9% and 13% of the population, with illegals consisting of 25% to 48% of the immigrant population.

I think the problem most see it that other factors lead to a decline in immigrant population between the 60s and 70s, before returning to historic norms. Immigrant population actually fell to only 4.6% of the total population in the 70s. Rising to a peak in the 2000s of 12.5% before declining slightly and leveling off at 11%

The association of illegals with Mexicans deserves another look as well. While they do make up the bulk of the illegal population they only comprise 57% of the illegal population. 24% come from Latin America. 9% from Asia. 6% From Europe and Canada, and 4% from the rest of the world.

Truth is there is plenty of room in the US, with population densities far below most of the worlds countries. Combine that with the fact that US grows pretty much half of the food grown in the world, the economy of the US makes up almost one sixth of the total world economy, and is larger than the next two largest economies combined. We have the room, and a growing population is good for the economy. Seeing how the natural born population seems content to breed just below sustainable levels (it takes 2.2 births per woman to sustain the population because of the percentages of women born vs males, the natural born population birth rates fluctuates between 1.9 and 2.0) having an immigrant population seems like a solution, not a problem.
