Consumer Tech for August ? Technology Contraction is Good for ...

By Richard M. Sherwin

Sony reduces its audio video computer lineup by 60%.? Arch rival Panasonic clips its 3D skews and completely drops some product categories.? Sharp decides not to enter the tablet market and contracts with other manufacturers to jointly produce large screen TVs. ?Korean rivals Samsung and LG had such similar video products that you couldn?t tell which product was which. Dell, HP and Lenovo wind up using some of the same off the shelf parts in their 2013 computers.

I feel very sorry for the 30,000 or more people that these technology behemoths laid-off this year so far. Many of the audio-video and PC devices these makers used to produce were only made to show how big these companies were. In the process, in the last five years, all these companies unnecessarily confused consumers ? and salespeople ? with tons of similar models.

The biggest benefit for consumers? ?This summer and early fall prices will drop even more and models will be cut as factory and manufacturing costs slide down, so you will save time, money and headaches in buying a TV, computer or stereo component.

Of course this will be more than offset by the 15,000 models of Smart Phones you may have to choose from.
