Eye Supplements That Work

?

Many people are turning to natural eye supplements to help them improve their vision. Many others decide to use supplements to help prevent such degenerative diseases as cataracts and macular degeneration. Eye supplements help people get the necessary nutrients one needs for maintaining healthy eyesight. A proper amount of vitamins combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle can help one maintain good vision and stave off degenerative eye conditions. Also, one has to look at the benefits and disadvantages of these supplements to decide which is best.

?

For instance, lutein is found in many foods as well as in supplement form. This antioxidant supports eye health as it is seen to reduce Age Related Macular Degeneration or AMD.

Although there are still studies being conducted to understand this correlation, there has been some evidence that it is effective in reducing AMD. Lutein has also been shown to reduce the risk of cataract extraction. People who consume lutein and other carotenoids through food sources such as broccoli and spinach and other lutein-rich vegetables have been found to have a lower risk of cataracts.

?

Other carotenoids such as beta-carotene are also natural eye supplements. Like the lutein, beta-carotene is associated with a lower risk of cataracts and used to prevent AMD. This is possibly because it is converted to vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient for the body.

However, one should exercise caution when taking this supplement because it is potentially harmful in higher doses. Pregnant women, smokers, those who have had angioplasty and people with a history of asbestos exposure are also warned against taking this supplement. Its effects on pregnancy is unknown while in some cases in can increase risk of cancer.

?

Bilberry is also in the family of natural eye supplements as an antioxidant. This fruit promotes good night vision and also fights against AMD to stave off blindness. It is also used to lower the risk of other degenerative eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and general loss of vision. There are currently no known side effects to bilberry and it is available as a tea in addition to its natural form.
