Show Dad how much you love him this Father?s Day by helping him stay healthy. June is Men?s Health Month ? the perfect time to remind the special men in your life to schedule important health screenings. St. Joseph Internal Medicine offers the following tips to keep Dad healthy all year long.
?
Men have particular health needs and should schedule annual physical exams with their primary care providers.
?
?Studies show that men are often less likely to have annual physicals than women,? says Dr. Kerry Riker of St. Joseph Internal Medicine, ?even though regular exams and screenings help save lives.?
?
In addition to a physical exam, men should have regular prostate exams to check for cancer, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, and be sure their immunizations are up to date, including annual flu shots.
?
Men should also talk to their primary care providers about scheduling a colonoscopy and discuss their family history to see if more specialized screenings for diabetes, heart disease and other conditions are needed. Talking to your doctor and treating problems early are important steps toward living a longer, healthier life.
?
Exercise also is important, particularly as we age. Get Dad outside this summer to shoot some hoops, throw a baseball or toss a Frisbee around the yard. Just 30 minutes of activity three or more times per week can help trim those extra pounds and keep your heart healthy.
?
Help keep the special men in your life healthy so they?ll be around for many more Father?s Days to come.
